Frequently Asked Questions
How are voiced and unvoiced th different?
Both sounds are made with the tongue tip just between the teeth. For the voiced th in this, that, then and with, the voice is on, so a hand on the throat feels a buzz. For the unvoiced th in thin, think, bath and moth, only air comes out and the throat stays still. Group 6 covers both, since they share one spelling.
At what age can children say the th sound?
The th sounds are among the later speech sounds to settle, and many children starting school still say fink for think or dat for that. That is often a normal part of speech development and does not stop them reading th words correctly on the page. If you are worried about your child’s speech, a speech and language therapist can advise.
How do you teach the th sound?
Use a mirror so your child can see their tongue peeking out between their teeth. Blow gently for the unvoiced th in thin, then add voice for the voiced th in this, and try a pair like fin and thin so they hear why the tongue position matters. Ehri et al. (2001) found that systematic phonics instruction helps children read words, and linking each sound to its spelling is at the heart of it.
What th words are in these books?
The books for the Jolly Phonics th sounds use voiced words like this, that, then, them and with, and unvoiced words like thin, thick, think, thing, three, bath, path, moth and cloth. Longer words such as bathtub, footpath and within can appear too, so children see th inside compound words. Reading a mix of both sounds builds the habit of checking which one fits.
