Frequently Asked Questions
Which long a spellings does Step 3, Unit 4 mix?
In Jolly Phonics Step 3, Unit 4, children bring together three spellings of the /ai/ sound: ai as in rain, ay as in play and a_e as in cake. Each tends to sit in a different place in a word, which helps when choosing between them. Less common spellings, such as the eigh in eight, are usually treated as tricky words at this stage.
At what age should a child know phonics?
Most children start learning letter sounds between four and six, and many can decode simple words by the end of their first year of school. Children move at different speeds, so a child still working on the basics at six or seven is not unusual. Ehri et al. (2001) found that phonics instruction had its biggest effects when it began early, in kindergarten or first grade.
Do UK schools still teach phonics?
Phonics is still central in England, where schools teach systematic synthetic phonics from Reception, and Year 1 pupils take a statutory phonics screening check. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland set their own approaches, but phonics is widely taught across the UK. Our article on the phonics screening check explains what the check involves and why it uses made-up words.
How do children choose between ai, ay and a_e?
Position is the best guide. Use ay at the end of a word, as in day and play, and ai or a_e in the middle, as in rain and cake. Because both ai and a_e are common in the middle of a word, children learn which one belongs by reading each word often, which is why stories that mix all three spellings are useful at this stage.
