Frequently Asked Questions
How do you say ie in words?
In short words like pie, tie and die, ie makes the long /ie/ sound, which is the sound this unit focuses on. In many longer words, though, ie says /ee/, as in field, chief and piece, and in friend it even says /e/. When children meet ie in a new word, trying /ie/ first and then /ee/ is a sensible strategy.
What are some examples of long vowel words?
Long vowels are the sounds that match the letter names, heard in cake and rain for a, tree and sea for e, kite and night for i, home and boat for o, and cube and few for u. Each long vowel has several spellings, which Steps 2 and 3 of Jolly Phonics work through. Long i words show this well, with ie, y, igh and i_e all in use.
How can children choose the right /ie/ spelling when writing?
A few patterns help. The y spelling usually ends a short word, as in my and fly; igh often comes before t, as in light and night; i_e wraps around one consonant, as in time and kite; and ie tends to end very short words, as in pie and tie. In Jolly Phonics Step 3, Unit 6, children see all four spellings together, although picking the right one still depends on meeting each word many times.
Why does Step 3 go back over the /ie/ spellings?
Step 2 introduces these spellings mainly for reading, while Step 3 returns to them grouped by sound, with more attention to spelling. Reading and writing are different tasks, since a reader only needs to recognise igh, but a writer has to choose it from several options. Chall’s Stages of Reading Development describe a stage of confirmation, when children consolidate what they have learned by reading familiar kinds of text.
