Frequently Asked Questions
What are the short vowel sounds?
The five short vowel sounds are /a/ in cat, /e/ in hen, /i/ in pig, /o/ in dog and /u/ in cup. Each is a quick, clipped sound, unlike the long vowels that say their letter names. Jolly Phonics Step 2, Unit 2 returns to these sounds for review, so children can tell them apart quickly before more alternative spellings arrive.
What are some short vowel words with e?
The short e sound is the /e/ in hen, and simple short vowel words with e include bed, red, net, pet, leg, web, jet and ten. Short e and short i are easy to mix up, especially in some accents, so pairs like pen and pin or bed and bid make good listening practice. Ask your child to say each word slowly and point to the vowel as they hear it.
Why go back over short vowels in Step 2?
Short vowels turn up in most simple words, so a child who hesitates over them will stumble again and again. A review unit, with short vowel stories to read, settles those sounds before children spend the rest of Step 2 on long vowels and alternative spellings. Snow, Burns & Griffin (1998) stressed that young readers need plenty of practice reading connected text, not just isolated words.
What are CVC words?
CVC stands for consonant, vowel, consonant, the pattern in words like cat, hen, sit, dog and bus. CVC words are the simplest way to check short vowels, because the vowel sits alone in the middle with nothing else to lean on. Short vowel decodable books build sentences from these words, and our guide to decodable text explains why that step from single words to sentences matters.
