Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a rule for choosing er, ir or ur?
For the /er/ sound there is no dependable rule, which is why this unit asks children to choose. The er spelling is the most common, especially at the end of words like sister, farmer and under, while ir and ur mostly sit in the middle, as in bird, first, turn and church. Children remember which spelling belongs to which word by linking its letters to its sounds each time they read it, a process called orthographic mapping.
How is ar different from er, ir and ur?
The ar spelling says /ar/, as in car, star and farm. The other three all say /er/, as in her, bird and fur. These are called r-controlled vowels, because the r changes the vowel sound in front of it. Children reach Jolly Phonics Step 3, Unit 11 having already met ar and er in Group 7, so the new challenge is choosing between er, ir and ur.
Can you give me some er, ir and ur words?
For er, try her, herd, term, fern and verb. For ir, try bird, girl, dirt, shirt, first and third, and for ur, try fur, burn, turn, curl, hurt and church. Pairs that sound the same but are spelled differently, like fir (a tree) and fur (on an animal), are a fun way to show children why the spelling matters.
What words end in ir?
Only a handful of common words end in ir, such as sir, fir and stir. When a child hears /er/ at the very end of a word, er is the most likely spelling, as in ever, never, under and later. Snow, Burns and Griffin (1998) called for plenty of exposure to regular spelling-sound patterns, and a simple first guess like this gives children a place to start.
