Frequently Asked Questions
What is the phonic sound of z?
The letter z makes a buzzing /z/ sound, the voiced version of /s/: the mouth shape is the same, but the voice is switched on. Encourage your child to say a long zzz rather than zuh, because an added uh sound makes blending harder. Try it with zip, where zzz-i-p blends far more smoothly than zuh-i-p.
What sounds can the letter z make?
In the words young children read, z almost always says /z/. A few words borrowed from other languages use it differently, like the /zh/ sound in azure, but those come much later. The bigger surprise for beginners is that the /z/ sound is often spelled with s, as in is, has and his, so it helps to point this out when your child meets those words.
What z words can children read in Group 5?
The books for the Jolly Phonics z sound use short CVC z words such as zip, zap, zag, zig and fez, and slightly longer ones like zest, zinc, zips and zigzag. Words with a double z, like buzz and fizz, come later with the other double letters in Step 2. Only a small number of z words can be built from the sounds taught so far, so you may see the same words across several stories.
Should you teach letter sounds or letter names first?
Most phonics approaches, Jolly Phonics included, teach letter sounds first, because sounds are what children blend to read. Letter names can follow later, often through an alphabet song. A meta-analysis by Ehri et al. (2001) found that systematic phonics had its strongest effects when teaching began early, before children could read on their own.
