Frequently Asked Questions
What sounds does ow make in phonics?
The ow spelling makes two sounds: /oa/ in snow, grow and show, and /ou/ in cow, how and town. Jolly Phonics Step 2, Unit 10 teaches both, so children learn to try one and then the other. A word like bow can even be read either way, depending on whether it means a ribbon or bending forward, which makes a good talking point.
Is ow a digraph?
The letters ow count as a digraph, because they work together to make one sound, even though that sound changes from word to word. The w here acts as part of the vowel, not as the consonant sound in wet or win. Both of its sounds are glides, called diphthongs, because your mouth changes shape as you say them.
What is the rule for ow?
Nothing in the spelling tells you which sound to use, so the best strategy is to try one and check whether the word makes sense. If a child reads cow with the /oa/ sound, the result is not a word they know, which prompts them to switch. Ow decodable books with a mix of both sounds build this checking habit, and Snow, Burns & Griffin (1998) listed reading for meaning among the core goals of early reading instruction.
Which ow words can children sort by sound?
For the /oa/ sound, try snow, grow, show, slow, low and window, and for the /ou/ sound, try cow, how, now, owl, town and brown. Sorting ow words into two groups by sound is a quick activity that helps children hear the difference. It also prepares them for Step 3, where ow returns alongside other spellings of each sound, and our guide to phonemic awareness has more simple sound games.
