Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a rule for ou and ow?
There is a helpful pattern rather than a strict rule. The ou spelling usually sits at the start or in the middle of a word (out, loud, round, mouth), while ow tends to come at the end (cow, how, now) or before a final n or l (town, brown, owl). Crowd is one of the exceptions, so children still need to see each word in print. Books for Jolly Phonics Step 3, Unit 9 put both spellings side by side, so that choice comes up again and again.
What are some ou words for children to read?
Good ou words for early readers include out, loud, cloud, round, shout, found, mouth and ground. A few common words begin with ou, such as out, ouch and ounce, which shows children that ou can open a word as well as sit inside one. Reading them in ou and ow decodable books gives children real sentences instead of isolated lists.
What are some ow words, and does ow always say /ou/?
Common ow words with the /ou/ sound include cow, now, how, down, town, owl, brown, crown and flower. The same spelling also says /oa/ in words like snow, grow and show, which children met earlier in Step 3, Unit 7. When a child meets an ow word, they can try both sounds and keep the one that makes sense in the sentence. Bow is a good word to discuss, because it can mean bending at the waist or a ribbon tied in a knot.
How can I explain /ou/ and its two spellings to my child?
Start with a sound children already make: the /ou/ they say when they bump a knee. Explain that /ou/ is one of the diphthongs, vowel sounds where the mouth glides from one shape to another, and that English writes it as ou or ow. Then sort word cards into two columns and read them aloud together. A meta-analysis by Ehri et al. (2001) found that systematic phonics teaching leads to better word reading than approaches with little or no phonics, and short sorting games fit that approach well.
