Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ch digraph?
In phonics, the ch digraph is two letters that make one sound, /ch/, as in chip and much. The lips push forward and the tongue releases a short burst of air, a bit like a small sneeze. In longer words later on, ch can also say /k/, as in school, or /sh/, as in chef, but in Group 6 it says /ch/.
When is the /ch/ sound spelled tch?
After a single short vowel at the end of a word, /ch/ is often spelled tch, as in catch, match, fetch, pitch and hutch. After a consonant or a two-letter vowel, it is usually just ch, as in lunch, bench, coach and cheek. A few very common words, such as much, such and rich, break the pattern, so they are worth pointing out.
What words start with ch?
The books for the Jolly Phonics ch sound include ch words such as chip, chop, chin, chat, chug, chest and chimp, and longer ones that use earlier sounds, like cheek, cheer, chain and coach. Words ending in ch or tch, like lunch, bunch, pinch, catch and patch, also appear, so children see the sound at both ends of a word.
How can I teach the ch sound at home?
Model the sound first, then have your child copy it while watching your mouth, and contrast it with sh, which comes next in Group 6: ch is short and sharp, while sh is long and quiet. Next, blend a few words together, such as ch-i-p and ch-o-p. The National Reading Panel (2000) found that guided oral reading, with feedback from an adult, builds fluency, so finish by reading a ch story aloud together.
