Frequently Asked Questions

What are oi and oy words, and when is each one used?

Both spellings stand for the same /oi/ sound, a diphthong you can hear in the middle of point and at the end of toy. As a guide, oi appears at the start or in the middle of a word (oil, coin, spoil, noisy), while oy usually closes a word (boy, ahoy, enjoy, destroy). That pattern gives children in Jolly Phonics Step 3, Unit 10 a sensible first guess when they spell a word they have not seen before.

Which harder oi words come up in this unit?

Children first met oi in Group 7, with words like oil and boil. This unit adds harder oi words such as spoil, hoist, joint and moist, plus two-syllable words like avoid, poison and appoint that keep the same spelling in a longer word. The National Reading Panel (2000) concluded that systematic phonics has its biggest impact in the early grades, and oi and oy decodable books give children connected sentences to apply it.

What are some words ending in oy for young readers?

Start with the oy words children already know from Step 2, Unit 7, such as boy and toy, then move on to ahoy, decoy, enjoy, annoy and destroy. Because oy so often closes a word, children can listen for /oi/ at the end and reach for oy first. Adding an ending leaves the spelling alone, so toys, enjoyed and annoying all keep their oy.

What words start with oy?

Very few English words begin with oy, and oyster is the one children are most likely to meet. Words that start with the /oi/ sound are far more often spelled oi, as in oil, oink and ointment. Pointing this out is part of good phonics teaching, because children learn that where a sound falls in a word often guides the spelling.
