Frequently Asked Questions
What is the rule for double letters in a word?
The floss rule, named after a word that follows it, says that f, l, s and z are usually doubled at the end of a one-syllable word with a short vowel, as in off, bell, miss and buzz. Jolly Phonics Step 2, Unit 4 teaches these double letters alongside short vowel words, so children see the pattern in stories as well as in spelling.
What is a double letter in a word called?
A pair of the same letters together is usually just called a double letter, or a double consonant when both are consonants, as in hill or egg. In phonics, the two letters are read as one sound, so ll says /l/ and ss says /s/. Seeing the pair as a unit helps children blend smoothly instead of saying the sound twice.
What are some double letter words for early readers?
Useful double letter words include bell, hill, doll, well, ill, miss, class, less, off, cliff, puff, buzz and fizz. They make strong short vowel words for early readers, because the vowel in each one is short and the ending is spelled in a predictable way. Our article on just right books looks at how to match a book to what a child can already read.
Do double letters make a different sound?
Double letters do not usually make a new sound. The pair stands for the same sound as the single letter, so ff sounds like f and zz sounds like z, and the doubling often signals that the vowel before it is short. According to the National Reading Panel (2000), systematic phonics teaching helped young children with spelling as well as reading, which matters here because double letters are mostly a spelling decision.
