Frequently Asked Questions
What words contain ue?
Besides short words like due, cue and glue, ue appears at the end of longer words such as rescue, value, statue, argue and continue. The letters u and e also sit together in queen and guess, but there the u belongs with the q or g, and the vowel sound comes from the letters after it. Pointing out that difference stops children from reading queen as if it had the /ue/ sound.
How do children choose between ue, ew and u_e when spelling?
Think about where the sound sits in the word. The ew spelling is common at the end of short words, as in few, new and stew; u_e is common in the middle, as in cube and tune; and ue ends both short and longer words, as in due and rescue. In Jolly Phonics Step 3, Unit 8 the focus is choosing between these, so it helps for children to say a word, think about where the sound falls, and then check the spelling in a book.
Is ue a vowel team?
The letters ue form a vowel team, because the two vowels work together to spell one sound. The final e is not sounded separately, which is why children who say u and then e end up with something that is not a word. Other vowel teams children already know, such as ai, ee and oa, follow the same idea, so linking ue to them makes it feel familiar.
How can I support Step 3 spelling at home?
Short, relaxed sessions work well: let your child read a page, then pick out one or two long u words and ask them to spell them aloud. Having books at home matters too, and a study across 35 countries linked having children’s books in the home with stronger early literacy and numeracy (Manu et al., 2019). Some of the books on this page are free to read online, which makes it easy to keep practice going.
