Crow is flying on the right side of the image, wings angled downward and body drooping slightly, giving a tired, weary appearance consistent with having been on a long flight. Crow's expression looks fatigued, with half-closed eyes. The scene is set outdoors on a clear day against a bright blue sky, with green treetops visible in the lower-right corner below Crow as it glides over a suburban neighbourhood landscape.

Crow flies all day. His wings feel like wet rags. But Crow is not sad. He has a plan. A big, grand plan. 'I aim to get some mates,' he says to himself. 'And then I aim to wow them with my singing voice.'

Page 2
On the left side of the image, Crow flies in from the right-centre with wings spread wide, beak open, looking eagerly toward the other characters. Beneath a large leafy tree on the far left, Rabbit stands upright with arms raised in surprise, Rooster stands on the ground pecking or looking forward with a calm expression, and Lizard sits casually on a rock, smiling with one arm resting on its knee. The scene is set outdoors in a sunny, grassy suburban yard with trees and soft dappled light. The right ~40% of the image is plain white background. A small yellow bird is visible flying near Crow.

Crow spots them from the sky. A rabbit, a rooster and a lizard, under a big tree. 'Yay,' Crow says low. He dives down with his best grin. 'Hello! I am Crow! I came to sing a grand song!' Rabbit jumps. Rooster blinks. Lizard just grins on a hot rock. No one says no. And to Crow, that means yes.

Page 3
On the left side of the image, Crow stands on a tree branch or in the clearing with beak wide open, singing loudly with musical notes emanating from him. On the right side of the image, Rabbit stands upright on a grassy area beneath trees, eyes squeezed shut with an annoyed, grimacing expression, as if the noise is unbearable. Rooster stands nearby in the centre-right, looking irritated with a frown. Lizard is perched in the grass just behind Rooster, also looking displeased with a scowl. The scene is set outdoors in a sunny, green woodland clearing with large trees and dappled light.

Crow opens his beak and sings. It is not grand. It is a big, loud wail. Rabbit makes a face. Rooster gasps. Even Lizard, all smiles just now, looks like she bit a lime.

Page 4
On the left side of the image, Crow is perched on a high tree branch with wings spread wide, head tilted back and eyes closed in a blissful expression, singing loudly. Musical notes float up from Crow into the air around the green leafy canopy. The scene is set outdoors during the daytime against a large tree with lush green foliage. The right side of the image is plain white background.

Crow hops up to the top branch and really lets it rip. Wings out. Beak up. What a loud wail it is! Way up here, Crow can not make out a thing but his own voice. That is fine by Crow. He sounds grand. Or so he tells himself.

Page 5
On the right side of the image, Crow stands in the centre with his beak wide open, wings spread dramatically, singing loudly with musical notes floating from his mouth. Rooster dashes away to the right with a startled expression. Rabbit bolts toward the upper right looking alarmed. Lizard dashes away in the background between them, also fleeing. The scene is set outdoors on a grassy field on a bright, sunny day with blue sky and a tree branch visible in the upper-right corner. The left side of the image is plain white background.

Down under the tree, the animals run. Rabbit bolts up the hill fast. Rooster dashes off with a loud cluck. And Lizard? Off in a blink, like a magic trick. Crow ends his big note and looks down. 'Hmm,' he says. 'My mates did not make out my song. Next time, I must sing louder.'

Page 6
Crow stands alone on the far left of the image, small and solitary in a sunlit grassy park setting beneath a large tree. Crow is perched on the ground, looking determined with beak slightly raised as if ready to set off. A tall tree with dark bark and lush green canopy dominates the left-centre of the scene, with dappled light filtering through onto bright green grass. The right side of the image is open, plain white background. The overall mood is quiet and a bit lonely, reflecting that Crow's friends have left.

His new mates are not there. Not one. Crow stands under the big tree by himself. The sunshine feels less hot now. 'They just had to go some place,' he says, low. Then he puffs up his chest. 'I will train! I will get so good that next time, they will stay.' Off he hops to get the perfect spot.

Page 7
On the right side of the image, Crow is shown in three separate vignettes set against soft green leaf-shaped patches, depicting him flitting from branch to branch. In the top vignette, Crow perches upright on a branch with his head tilted, listening. In the middle vignette, Crow is mid-hop with wings slightly spread, leaning forward in motion along a branch. In the bottom-right vignette, Crow is shown in a close-up, perched on a branch with a curious, searching expression, beak pointed forward. The left side of the image is plain white background. The outdoor scene is bright and airy, suggesting daytime.

Crow tries one branch. Not safe. He tries the next. Too leafy. On the third branch, bonk! A nut drops on his beak. 'Not a fan, I take it,' says Crow. He keeps looking. Some place out there is the perfect spot for the perfect song.

Page 8
Crow is perched on a branch in the upper-left of the image, high up in a large tree, leaning forward with a curious, wide-eyed expression as he peers down at something below. On the ground beneath the tree, a small brown wooden sign or post sits in the grass, catching Crow's attention. The scene is set outdoors in a wooded area with lush green foliage and soft dappled light, with the right side of the image open as plain white background.

Crow lands way up in the treetop and gazes down. There, in the sunshine, he spots a thing. A little wood thing, all by itself. Just sitting there, as if it waits for some one. Crow blinks. 'Wait a bit...'

Page 9
On the right side of the image, Crow is flying downward from the canopy of a large tree, wings spread wide, looking excitedly toward a wooden bench sitting on a grassy patch below. The bench looks like a small stage to Crow. The scene is an outdoor park setting bathed in warm golden-yellow light, suggesting a sunny afternoon. The left side of the image is open golden background, while the bench, tree, and Crow are all positioned on the right.

Down there sits a bench. 'That is not a bench,' Crow gasps. 'That is a stage!' He can see it all. Lights! Tunes! Fans that chant his name! Then a new plan pops up. A plan Crow never had before. What if he does not just sing at his mates? What if they sing too?

Page 10
On the left side of the image, Crow stands on a small wooden stage (the bench from the previous page), wings spread wide as he sets up a microphone on a tall stand. Rabbit stands nearby, looking on with a curious expression and ears perked up. Rooster stands to the right of the stage, watching Crow with wide eyes and interest. Lizard stands further back, leaning in toward the stage with a smile and curiosity. The scene is set outdoors in a sunny, grassy park area beneath a large leafy tree, with soft dappled light and scattered wildflowers on the ground. The right ~40% of the image is plain white background. A small blue bird is perched on the tree in the upper left.

Crow gets a mic. Do not ask where. He sets it up on the little wood stage. One by one, the animals peek down the path. 'What is that thing?' asks Rabbit. 'It may bite,' says Rooster. 'It looks fun,' says Lizard. Crow grins. 'Who wants to go first?'

Page 11
On the right side of the image, Rooster stands on a small wooden stage, leaning forward joyfully into a microphone stand, beak open wide as musical notes float upward, eyes wide with surprise and delight at the sound of his own singing. Rabbit stands just behind the stage, watching with a happy expression. Lizard stands in front of the stage near the microphone stand, looking up at Rooster. Crow is positioned in the centre-left area, wings spread wide with an encouraging, excited pose, facing toward the group on the right. The scene is set outdoors on a sunny day in a grassy clearing with soft green trees and foliage in the background. A small blue bird is visible in the upper right area near the trees.

'Rooster,' says Crow, 'step up here.' 'No, no, no,' says Rooster. 'I do not sing.' 'Just try,' says Crow. So Rooster steps up to the mic and opens his beak. Out comes a grand, happy sound. A nice, nice sound! Rooster gasps. 'Was that me?'

Page 12
In the lower-left portion of the image, Lizard stands on a wooden stage, mouth wide open and singing enthusiastically into a microphone on a stand, with musical notes floating above her, belting it out like a rockstar. In the lower-centre, Crow faces Lizard with wings spread wide, looking excited and cheering her on. Behind Crow to the right, Rooster perches and watches the performance, while Rabbit stands nearby with arms slightly raised and a happy smile, enjoying the show. The scene is set outdoors on a sunny day in a grassy park area with trees and colourful foliage on the left side, and open sky above.

'My turn!' Lizard hops up on the stage. She starts soft. Just a peep. 'More!' yells Crow. She sings louder. Then louder still. Then Lizard lays down a beat so fun that Rabbit's foot thumps and thumps. 'I can not stop it!' yells Rabbit, hopping in place. 'My feet will not quit!'

Page 13
On the right side of the image, Rabbit sits behind a drum set on a wooden stage, singing into a microphone on a stand with eyes closed and mouth open joyfully, while playing the drums with drumsticks. Musical notes float above her head. Crow is in the centre-right, wings spread wide as if dancing or cheering. Rooster stands to the left of Crow, looking on with an excited expression. Lizard stands upright nearby, watching the performance with one arm raised. The scene is set outdoors on a sunny grassy area beneath a large leafy tree, with small colourful birds perched in the branches above.

Then Rabbit spots the drums. 'Ooh,' she says. 'Ooh, yes.' She takes the drumsticks and lets it rip. Boom, tap, boom, boom, tap! She sings and drums at the same time, like a star. 'How can she do that?' yells Rooster. Rabbit grins. 'No clue!'

Page 14
On the left side of the image, Crow stands centre-stage with wings spread wide, performing and singing enthusiastically in a sunny outdoor clearing, standing in a spotlight. Facing Crow as an appreciative audience, Rabbit sits behind a drum set tapping a drum with a happy smile, Rooster stands in front with wings spread joyfully, and Lizard stands nearby watching with delight. The scene is set in a bright, grassy meadow bordered by lush green trees, with small flowers dotting the ground. A small yellow bird is flying in the upper-left background among the trees.

Then all three turn to Crow. 'Crow's turn,' says Lizard. Crow blinks. For the first time, he feels shy. What if his mates run off, like before? 'Sing!' they all yell. So Crow steps up. The spotlight is on him now. Rabbit taps her drum. Rooster flaps his wings. And Crow opens his beak and lets it all out. No one runs. Not even a bit.

Page 15
On the right side of the image, the four animals are performing together as a band outdoors on a grassy area under a blue sky. Rabbit sits behind a drum set with eyes closed and mouth open, singing happily while playing drums. Rooster stands in front of a microphone, singing with a joyful expression. Lizard stands upright behind Rooster, strumming a guitar with a wide grin. Crow is on the far right, dancing with wings spread wide and music notes floating around him, looking delighted. The left side of the image is plain white/sky background. Two small birds, one orange-brown and one pink, are flying in the sky above the band.

And that is the way the band starts. Rooster sings. Lizard strums. Rabbit smashes the drums as if she is mad at them. And Crow? Crow dances. Wings out, feet flying, notes all round him. Crow's wail never gets nice. But his mates are not sad, not one bit. Because Crow does not get mates by being the best singer. He gets them by giving them the mic.
