Frequently Asked Questions
What is a short u word?
A short u word has the vowel sound you hear in up, sun and cup, made with the mouth relaxed and slightly open. In simple CVC words the u sits between two consonants, as in bud, tug, hut and pup, and it usually says this sound. Long u says its own name instead, as in cute or mule, which children meet later with silent e.
What are some short u CVC words for kids?
Good short u CVC words to start with include sun, fun, run, bus, hug, cup, mud and pup. At this level children also meet jump, just and yum, which mix short u with the new letters j and y. Say each word slowly, stretch the middle sound, and ask your child which vowel they hear.
Does the word another have a short u sound?
The o in another makes the same sound as short u, which is why it rhymes with brother and mother. English spells this sound with o in a handful of common words, such as come, some, love and son. At this level the stories mostly use the letter u for the sound, and the o spellings are usually taught later as tricky words.
What are the disadvantages of decodable books?
Early decodable books can feel a little stiff, because only a small set of sounds is available and the stories hold fewer rich words than a picture book read aloud. That is why many teachers pair short u decodable books with reading aloud from richer stories that build vocabulary and a love of language. Snow, Burns & Griffin (1998) called for both explicit teaching of letters and sounds and plenty of rich language experience, so each kind of book has its own job.
