Frequently Asked Questions
What are some ui words?
Common ui words include fruit, juice, suit, suitcase, cruise, bruise and recruit, where ui spells the long oo sound heard in moon. A handful of words use ui differently: in build, guilt and biscuit it spells a short i sound, and in ruin the u and i belong to separate syllables. Starting with the fruit and juice group gives children the most useful pattern first.
Is ui a vowel team?
In words like fruit, juice and suit, ui works as a vowel team, with two vowels spelling one sound. It is one of the rarer vowel teams, far less common than oo, ew or ue for the same sound. Because the pair can also split into two syllables, as in ruin and genuine, children benefit from checking whether the team reading makes a real word.
What are some vowel team words?
Vowel teams are pairs of letters that work together to spell one vowel sound, like ai in rain, ay in play, ee in tree, ea in eat, oa in boat, ow in snow and oo in moon. Rarer teams, including ui in fruit and ei in ceiling, come later, once the common ones feel automatic. Our scope and sequence shows the order these vowel teams appear across the levels.
Why is ui taught later than other vowel teams?
The ui spelling appears in far fewer words than other ways of writing the same sound, so it makes sense to learn oo, ew, ue and u-e first. Ui decodable books then give children concentrated practice with the rarer spelling, which they would otherwise meet only now and then. Stanovich (1986) showed how reading experience compounds, as children who read more build more words and skills over time.
