Bookbot Decodable Books: ai, ay

Vowel Teams31 books

Every child deserves stories that spark curiosity and build a foundation for lifelong learning. These ai and ay decodable books teach two spellings of long a: ai in the middle of words like rain, tail and train, and ay at the end of day, play and stay. Frequently Asked Questions

When do you use ai and when do you use ay?

Use ai in the middle of a word or syllable, usually before a consonant, as in rain, wait and paint. Use ay at the end, as in day, play and stay. The rule is reliable enough that children can use it to spell new words, and it comes up again with oi and oy.

What are some ai and ay words?

Good ai words to start with are rain, tail, wait, train, pail and paint. For ay, try day, play, say, way, stay and spray. Writing the two lists side by side makes the pattern easy to see, and children can add new words to the right column as they find them in ai and ay decodable books.

Why do words end in ay instead of ai?

English words rarely end in the letter i, so when the long a sound falls at the end of a word, y takes the place of i and ai becomes ay. The same swap happens with oi and oy, as in coin and boy. Knowing the reason behind a spelling makes it easier for children to remember.

How do you teach ai and ay?

Begin with sorting: read a mixed set of long a words aloud together and place each one under ai or ay, depending on where the sound falls. Then read a story and hunt for both spellings, and finish by spelling a few words from memory. The National Reading Panel (2000) found that systematic phonics instruction helps children in the early grades, and short, regular practice like this fits that approach.
