Frequently Asked Questions
What is the rule for silent e?
When a word ends in vowel, consonant, e, the e is silent and the vowel before it usually says its name. That is the change from hid to hide, cap to cape and cub to cube. Teachers often write the pattern as CVCe or VCe, and it turns up in a huge number of everyday words.
Is magic e the same as silent e?
Magic e, bossy e, sneaky e and silent e all describe the same pattern, where a final e makes the earlier vowel long. The names differ from classroom to classroom, so it helps to use whichever one your child’s teacher uses. These silent e stories use words like brave, smile, stone and huge to reinforce the pattern.
What grade do children learn silent e?
Many children meet silent e in first grade, once they can read short-vowel words and blends with some confidence. That order matters, because the pattern only makes sense when a child already knows the short sound it changes. Jeanne Chall described this early period as the initial reading and decoding stage, and our scope and sequence shows where silent e sits among the other levels.
What are common mistakes with magic e?
The most common slip is ignoring the e and reading hope as hop or made as mad. Some children go the other way and try to say the e aloud. It also helps to mention that have, give and love keep a final e without a long vowel, because English words rarely end in v, so children are not thrown when the rule seems to break.
