Frequently Asked Questions
What words end with tion?
Words ending in tion are some of the most common long words in English: action, nation, station, lotion, fraction, addition and tradition are just a few. In almost all of them, tion sounds like ‘shun’, which makes it a reliable chunk to read at a glance. Once a child knows this, tion words that look long, like celebration or information, become far easier to tackle.
What does the tion ending mean?
The tion ending usually turns a verb into a noun that names an action or its result: act becomes action, add becomes addition, and celebrate becomes celebration. That makes it part of the wider family of prefixes and suffixes children learn as meaningful word parts. Knowing the job of the ending helps with meaning as well as with reading the word aloud.
Is tion or ion the suffix?
Strictly speaking, the suffix is -ion, and the t usually belongs to the base word, as in act and action or invent and invention. For reading, though, many teachers treat tion as one chunk because it so reliably says ‘shun’. Both views are useful: the chunk helps with decoding, and the base word helps with spelling and meaning, as our article on decoding and morphology explains.
How do ci and si make the sh sound?
When ci or si comes before another vowel in an unstressed syllable, it often says sh, as in special, social and ancient, or mission, session and tension. Ti works the same way in patient and in most tion words. Ti ci si decodable books group these spellings so children see that three letter pairs can share one sound, an idea our guide to what phonics is puts in context.
