Frequently Asked Questions

What are some words that end in le?

Common le words include table, apple, bottle, little, candle, puzzle, riddle, jungle and bubble. In each one the le joins the consonant before it to make the final syllable, so table splits as ta-ble and bottle as bot-tle. The e is silent and the ending sounds like a quick ‘ul’, which is why these endings are called stable: they sound the same almost every time.

What is a consonant-le syllable?

A consonant-le syllable is the final syllable in words like ta-ble, pur-ple and gig-gle, made from one consonant plus le. The silent e means children can read the chunk as a single unit, such as ‘bul’, ‘pul’ or ‘gul’, rather than letter by letter. Finding this chunk first is a useful trick, because the rest of the word then splits cleanly.

How are -al, -el and -il endings different from -le?

They sound very similar, since each usually ends in a soft, unstressed ‘ul’ sound, but the spelling changes: final and signal use al, travel and gravel use el, and pencil and evil use il. For reading, children can treat all four as stable final chunks. Spelling is the harder part, so it helps to group words by ending and read them together in consonant le decodable books and other texts.

What is the best way to teach multisyllabic words?

A short routine works well: find the vowels, split the word into syllables, read each part, then blend and check that the word makes sense. Stable endings like -le give children an anchor, because the last syllable is predictable. The National Reading Panel (2000) found that explicit, systematic phonics instruction benefits beginning readers. Our scope and sequence shows how the Bookbot levels build up to longer words.
