Frequently Asked Questions
Is ou a diphthong?
In words like out, loud and cloud, ou spells a diphthong, a vowel sound that glides from one position to another inside the same syllable. The letters themselves are a vowel team, and in other words, such as soup, the same team spells a single long sound instead. So the answer depends on the word, which is part of what makes ou worth practicing.
What are the four sounds of ou?
The ou spelling most often says the sound in out and house. It can also say the short oo sound in could, would and should, the long oo sound in you and soup, and the long o sound in soul. Some lists add the short u in touch and young, which is why children learn to try another sound when the first one does not make a real word.
How do you know whether to use ou or ow?
As a general guide, ou usually comes in the middle of a word before a consonant, as in out, loud and mouse, while ow sits at the end or before n or l, as in cow, town and owl. There are exceptions, such as crowd, so reading plenty of ou decodable books helps the right spelling start to look familiar. Our guide to decodable text explains why patterned practice like this helps.
How do you explain ou to a child?
Start with the most common sound and a word your child already knows, like out, then collect more words that share it: shout, proud, ground and found. Once that sound is secure, introduce could and you as the same letters saying something different. Bus, van IJzendoorn and Pellegrini (1995) linked shared book reading with early literacy, so reading and chatting about these words together counts as practice.
