Frequently Asked Questions

What is ee in phonics?

In phonics, ee is a vowel team, also called a vowel digraph: two letters that make one sound, the long e in see and green. It is one of the most dependable spellings in English, so children can trust it almost every time. The main thing that changes it is a following r, as in deer and cheer, which children learn later.

How do you know if a word uses ee or ea?

Sound alone will not tell you, because ee and ea both spell long e in many words, such as meet and meat or see and sea. Children learn which spelling belongs in each word by reading it many times until it sticks, a process our guide to orthographic mapping explains. Pairs like week and weak are a fun way to show that spelling can signal meaning.

What words have e_e, and how are they different from ee?

The e_e pattern is silent e with the letter e, as in these, eve and theme, and it is much rarer than ee. Both spell long e, but e_e splits the two letters around a consonant, while ee keeps them side by side. Children meet e_e at the silent e level, then see ee do the same job in far more everyday words.

What words start with ee?

Only a handful of words start with ee, such as eel and eerie, so most ee words have the team in the middle or at the end: feet, seed, sleep, tree and three. Reading ee decodable books full of these words helps the pattern become automatic. Stanovich (1986) showed that children who read more pull ahead in vocabulary and fluency, so short daily reading pays off.
