Frequently Asked Questions
What are the two sounds of oo?
The oo team has a long sound, heard in moon, food and soon, and a short sound, heard in book, good and foot. Both are common, so children need to know each one well. A simple way to name them is long and short oo, or the oo in zoo and the oo in look.
Is there a rule for which sound oo makes?
There is no rule that always works, but oo followed by k often has the short sound, as in book, look, cook and took. Otherwise, children can try the long sound first and switch if the word does not sound right. Accents vary too: in some regions room and roof are said with the short sound, so let your child read the way they speak.
What are some fun oo words for kids?
Kids love oo words with sound effects or silly pictures. For the long sound, try zoom, boom, moo, hoot, broom and spoon, and for the short one, hook, cook, wood and stood. Acting out a few of these while reading oo decodable books keeps practice lively, and rereading a favorite story on a few different days builds reading fluency.
What other spellings make the oo sound?
Long oo has several spellings besides oo, including ew in flew, ue in blue, u_e in flute, ou in soup and ui in fruit. This collection also has separate books for ou, ew and ui: ou comes before oo, ew a little after it, and ui much later. Ehri et al. (2001) found that systematic phonics, where patterns are taught in a planned order, helps children learn to read words.
