Frequently Asked Questions
What is ch in phonics?
In phonics, ch is a digraph: two letters that make one sound, heard at the start of chip and the end of lunch. Children learn to see c and h together and say one quick sound, rather than a /c/ followed by an /h/. At this level the sound appears in short words like chop, chin, much and bench.
Is ch a phoneme or a digraph?
It is both, depending on whether you mean the sound or the letters. The sound itself is a single phoneme, and the two letters that spell it, c and h, are a digraph. Snow, Burns & Griffin (1998) stressed that children need to understand how written letters represent the sounds of speech, and this distinction is a small part of that.
What is the rule for ch and tch?
At the end of a short word, right after a short vowel, the ch sound is usually spelled tch, as in catch, patch and itch. After a consonant or a long vowel it is spelled ch, as in bench, lunch and reach. A few common words, including much, such, rich and which, break the rule and are best learned as exceptions.
How do you teach the ch sound to kids?
Start by contrasting ch with sh, which children often mix up, using pairs like chip and ship, chop and shop, or match and mash. Ch is a short burst, while sh can be stretched out. Once your child hears the difference, ch digraph decodable books give them repeated practice, and our scope and sequence shows what comes next.
