A girl named Ada lives by the beach. One day her mom is not back. Ada spots one big step in the sand.
Ada runs to old Nuur. 'Dhegdheer has Ada's mom,' Nuur tells her. He hands Ada a small pod on a chain. It can bang like bells.
Ada chains the pod to her arm. Then she runs north on the big steps. The salt land is flat and white.
Ada gets to the cave. A thorn pen sits by it. Mom is in the pen. Dhegdheer naps, with her big ear on her chin.
Ada tugs at the thorn pen. Snap! The dry thorn cracks. The big ear catches it. 'Who is this?' Dhegdheer yells.
Ada runs. Dhegdheer runs fast. The big ear locks on each step. Ada can not get far.
Then Ada hits the salt land. Crack, crack! She flings the pod far left. It rings like bells. Dhegdheer runs left, but can not catch Ada.
Ada runs back. She grabs mom's hand. 'Run! Be still!' Ada yells. They all rush to the ditch.
A big yell splits the dark. Dhegdheer got the trick. Her big ear can catch the soft steps. She runs back. An old man trips and falls.
Ada runs back and tugs the old man up. She drags him to the salt land. She stamps and stamps. So much bang, from all sides! Dhegdheer grabs her ear and yells. Then she runs north and is not back again.
At last, all are home. Mom fills a mug. Old Nuur sits for a chat. 'Ada used the door. Then Ada used the wall,' he tells her. Ada grins. Now all tell Ada's tale, big and bold.
