Frequently Asked Questions
What are some words with nk?
Nk words fall into neat families: bank, tank and thank; pink, sink and wink; honk and bonk; and junk, bunk and trunk. You will nearly always find nk at the end of a word or syllable, straight after a short vowel. Reading one family at a time gives children quick success.
Is nk a blend or a digraph?
Nk is not a true digraph, because you hear two sounds: the ng sound and a /k/. Many teachers call endings like -ank, -ink and -unk glued or welded sounds, since the vowel and the nk are easier to read as one chunk. Either label works, as long as your child reads the whole chunk smoothly.
How do you pronounce nk?
Say sing, then add a /k/ at the end while keeping your tongue at the back of your mouth, and you have sink. The n in nk is really the ng sound, not the /n/ in net. Saying pairs like sing and sink or bang and bank helps children feel the difference.
Do any words start with nk?
English words do not start with nk, so children will only meet it at the end of words like drink or in the middle of longer words like monkey and blanket. That makes nk decodable books a good place to learn it as an ending. The National Reading Panel (2000) found that guided oral reading, where children read aloud and get feedback, supports fluency, so try paired reading at home and listen in as your child reads.
