Frequently Asked Questions

What is an African folk tale?

An African folk tale is a traditional story passed down by storytellers, often out loud and from one generation to the next. Many feature talking animals, like Anansi the spider or a clever hare, and end with a lesson or an explanation of something in nature. For first graders, these tales are a friendly introduction to how stories work: a character, a problem, a clever plan and an ending.

What are some popular African folktales for 1st graders?

Anansi stories are a favourite, such as the story of Anansi trying to hide all the world’s wisdom in a pot at the top of a tree. He struggles to climb with the pot tied to his front, his young son suggests tying it to his back, and in his frustration the pot falls and scatters wisdom everywhere. African folktales for 1st graders work best when they are short and funny like this, with a twist children can retell in their own words.

How do African folktales for beginning readers support phonics?

In first grade, children are learning to blend short vowel words, consonant blends and digraphs such as sh, ch and ck. The tales on this page are written in decodable text at those levels, so a child can sound out most words instead of guessing from the pictures. The National Reading Panel (2000) found that phonics taught systematically and early, in kindergarten and first grade, works better than phonics introduced later. Read more about what phonics is and why it matters.

How can I share African stories with my 5 year old?

Sharing African stories for 5 year olds works best as a team effort: read the harder parts yourself, and let your child read the words they can sound out. Pause to ask who is being clever and what might happen next, because trickster tales are full of plans worth predicting. A meta-analysis by Bus, van IJzendoorn and Pellegrini (1995) found that shared book reading goes hand in hand with stronger language and early reading skills in young children.
