Frequently Asked Questions

What are some ew words?

Common ew words include new, few, dew, flew, grew, crew, drew, blew, chew, stew and threw. Most are short and easy to picture, which makes them great for early practice. Many are also past tense verbs, like grew from grow and blew from blow, a pattern older children enjoy spotting.

What sounds does ew make?

Ew makes two closely related sounds. In flew, crew and chew it says long oo, and in few and view it says yoo, like the word you. For new, dew and stew, the sound depends on accent: many Americans say noo, while many British and Australian speakers say nyoo, and both are correct.

What are words that start with ew?

Very few words start with ew. The best known is ewe, a female sheep, which is said exactly like you, and there is also ewer, an old word for a jug. Everyday ew words have the team at the end, so that is where children should expect to find it.

Can you give me a list of ew decodable books?

This page gathers the ew decodable books in one place, and many of them are free to read online. Our scope and sequence shows where ew sits among the other vowel teams, so you can plan what comes before and after. Ehri et al. (2001) found that systematic phonics taught in a planned order helps children both read words and understand text.
