Frequently Asked Questions
What are some ow words?
Ow words split into two groups. One group shares the sound in cow, such as now, how, down, town, brown and owl, and the other says long o, as in low, snow, grow, show and slow. Sorting a pile of ow words into these two groups is a quick game after reading.
How do children know which sound ow makes?
The letters alone often will not tell them, so children try one sound and check whether it makes a real word that fits the sentence. A few words even change meaning with the sound, like bow: you can bow to a crowd or tie a bow in your hair. Pairs like this show why reading for meaning matters as much as decoding, a balance Snow, Burns & Griffin (1998) argued for.
What is a long o vowel sound?
A long o says the letter’s name, as in go. English spells it several ways: an o at the end of a syllable in no, o_e in home, ow in snow and oa in boat. Ow decodable books focus on one of these spellings, and the oa books come a little later in the collection.
Is ow a diphthong?
In phonics lessons, ow in cow is usually called a diphthong, because the mouth glides from one vowel into another in the same syllable. The ow in snow is taught as a long o vowel team, though for many speakers it glides slightly too. Either way, children only need to know the two sounds and when to try each one.
