Frequently Asked Questions

What are 10 common prefixes, with examples?

Ten prefixes children meet often are re- (redo), un- (unfair), dis- (dislike), non- (nonstop), in- (incorrect), pre- (preheat), mis- (misspell), de- (defrost), sub- (subway) and over- (overflow). These prefixes examples turn up constantly in children’s books and school texts. Once a child recognises the prefix as one chunk, the rest of the word is usually a base word they already know.

How do you know if it's a prefix or a suffix?

Position is the giveaway: a prefix comes at the start of a word, as in unkind, and a suffix comes at the end, as in kindness. Both attach to a base word, and some words have one of each, such as unhelpful. Asking your child to find the base word first, then look at what comes before and after it, makes prefixes and suffixes much easier to sort.

What does the dis prefix mean?

The dis prefix usually means not, or the opposite of, so dislike means to not like and disagree is the opposite of agree. It can also suggest undoing or removing something, as in disappear or disconnect. Because dis- is so common and so predictable, it is one of the most useful prefixes for children to learn as a single chunk.

How do prefixes help children work out new words?

A prefix gives both a sound clue and a meaning clue, so a child who knows un- means not can read unfair and understand it straight away. Prefix decodable books build this habit with base words the child can already decode. Stanovich (1986) showed that children who read with ease tend to read more and keep growing, and our article on decoding and morphology goes deeper into word parts.
