Frequently Asked Questions
What are consonant blends?
A consonant blend is two or three consonants side by side where you can still hear each sound, like gr in grin, sp in spot and str in strap. That makes a blend different from a digraph such as sh, where two letters make one new sound. Here, blends sit at the start of words, and the ending blends from the earlier CVCC books come back in words like blast and grand.
What are some common blends?
Blends are usually taught in three families. L-blends include bl, cl, fl, gl, pl and sl; r-blends include br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr and tr; and s blend words start with sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st or sw, as in snug, spot and swim. Learning them as families helps children spot the pattern in new words.
How do you teach a child to blend letters?
Begin aloud: say the sounds /s/ /p/ /o/ /t/ and let your child push them together into spot. Next, have them point under each letter while saying its sound, keeping the first two consonants close together so grin does not turn into guh-rin. Our guide to phonemic awareness explains why this listening work matters before and during reading.
How are blends taught in first grade?
In many first grade classrooms, blends follow soon after short-vowel CVC words, and this collection teaches ending blends in the CVCC books before beginning blends here. Small spelling rules come along too, such as doubling f, l, s or z after a short vowel in off, hill and buzz, known as the floss rule. Ehri et al. (2001) found that systematic phonics had its strongest effects when it began in kindergarten or first grade, which is where consonant blends decodable books fit.
