Frequently Asked Questions

Which nouns take es to make a plural?

Most nouns that end in s, ss, sh, ch, x or z add es to make the plural, as in buses, glasses, dishes, watches, boxes and buzzes. A few words ending in o take es as well, such as tomatoes and heroes. These es words share a sound pattern too: the ending adds a syllable that sounds like iz, which children can hear when they clap the word.

How can my child tell whether a plural needs s or es?

A simple test is to say the plural aloud and count the beats. If the word gains a syllable, as dish becomes dish-es, the spelling is usually es; if it stays the same length, as cat becomes cats, it is usually just s. The main exception is a word that already ends in a silent e, such as horse or house, which adds only s even though you hear an extra beat.

Is es a suffix?

The es ending is a suffix, one of the small word parts that change a word’s job. On nouns it marks the plural (box, boxes), and on verbs it shows who is doing the action (she fixes, he washes). Learning early endings like s, es and ed prepares children for the wider world of prefixes and suffixes, which our article on decoding and morphology explores.

How can I work on plural words with my child at home?

Start with things you can count, such as two boxes, three dishes or four brushes, and ask your child to read or write the plural. Then read es decodable books together and pause on each plural to find the base word hiding inside it. Short, regular sessions like this keep the pattern fresh without turning practice into a chore.
