Frequently Asked Questions

How do you say aw in English?

The aw sound is the one in saw and law, made with the mouth open and rounded. Its exact sound varies by accent, and in many American accents it is close to the short o in cot. Children should read it the way it sounds in their own speech, whether it is spelled aw or au.

When do you use au and when do you use aw?

As a general guide, au comes at the start or in the middle of a word, often before a consonant, as in haul, fault and August. Aw usually sits at the end of a word or before n or l, as in saw, lawn and crawl. The pattern is not perfect, but it gives children a sensible first guess when they spell.

What are some words with au?

Common au words include haul, pause, cause, sauce, fault, launch and author, as well as the month August. Most place au in the middle of the word, which is why au and aw decodable books pair it with aw words like jaw and claw. Reading the two spellings side by side helps children notice where each one tends to go.

What words end in aw?

Plenty of short words end in aw, including saw, paw, jaw, raw, law, draw, claw and straw. They are easy to picture, which makes them handy for early practice and quick drawing games. Bus, van IJzendoorn and Pellegrini (1995) linked shared book reading with young children’s language and early literacy, so talk about the words as you read together.
