Allie sits on the carpet with picture books and toys all around her. She picks up an old picture of her mum and holds it up with a grin. Her mum has short hair and a big, pretty smile. 'I want a haircut just like that!' Allie says. 'It cannot be a mistake to look like Mum!'
Allie finds her craft scissors and sits on the mat. She has never cut her own hair before, but how hard can it be? What could happen? Snip, snip, snip! Bits of dark hair scatter all around her.
Allie thinks she is all done. She picks up a little mirror to admire her new look. But when she sees herself... oh no. What an error!
Allie's haircut is horrid! Her hair pokes out in clumps, some long and some short. She wants her long hair back, but that cannot happen. 'What a mistake!' she whispers. 'What do I do now?'
Allie looks around the house. She finds a bowl of noodles and plops it on her head like a costume wig. She holds up her mirror and peeks. Will noodles make her look pretty? No! And now her head is all wet!
Allie tries green beans next. She puts the long pods over her head like long, wild hair. Mum, Dad, and her sister spot her, and they all point and grin! The beans do not help and just make her head stinky!
Allie will not give up. She piles spinach leaves on top of her head like a green blanket. Dad shakes and holds his belly, and her sister hugs a red ball. The spinach does not help either, and now her head is all itchy!
Allie does not want Mum or Dad to see this horrid mistake. She hides behind the big red couch. Her scissors sit on the carpet next to her. "Allie, come out of there," Mum calls from across the room.
Mum finds Allie and carries her to the couch. Dad sits on the arm, and her sister sits in close. 'You are always pretty,' Mum says. She slips a hairband onto Allie's head and holds up the mirror. Allie grins. This is no mistake. She looks perfect!
Allie closes her eyes and smiles. The red headband with its pretty bow sits just right in her short hair. Maybe this haircut was not such a mistake after all. Short hair can look just as pretty! But next time, she will let Mum handle the scissors.
