Who Stole the Sticks? UFLI Foundations Lesson 64
Practice Words
Alex crafted a rod from sticks and string. She rushed to the water and smiled. 'Steve!' she called. 'Fish with me!'
Steve had no rod, not one bit of one. 'Go and craft one,' said Alex. 'I will fish till then.' She smiled and cast the line in the water.
Steve hunted for sticks on the sand. But the pile was not much. Just stone and a block. 'Where did it all go?' he said.
Steve gazed at the land past the water. Lots of plants were there. Lots of sticks. But what a long swim! 'No,' he said. 'I will not swim to that land for a stick.'
Steve checked the land by the homes. Not much was there. Not one stick. Steve grunted. 'Who got all the sticks?'
Then Steve checked an aged stone bin on the hill. A rod was in it! 'Yes!' he yelled, and lifted it up.
But the rod was aged. The string was thin, and the stick had a crack in it. 'It is not the best,' said Steve. 'But it is a rod.'
Steve hunted in the tall grass. He checked plant by plant. Not a thing. Mist drifted in. The sun faded. Steve longed for a fish.
Then a rod poked up from a big pit! Steve jumped in and got it. But this rod was busted too. 'Oh no,' he grunted.
It was dusk. Steve walked home with the two bad rods. He panted. What a long, long hunt. And not one fish.
Alex gazed at the aged rods. Then she smiled a big smile. 'I can fix this!' She rushed to the crafting block and blended the best bits of the two rods.
Alex held up a rod, just made. 'There, Steve! I crafted it from the two bad rods.' She smiled. 'We can fish! Best fish wins. Go!'
