Ted stands boldly in front of his house, holding his white cane. Today is his friend's birthday party, and he feels truly glad. He can find the way! Close by, Cat peeks out with wide eyes, watching keenly as Ted sets off.
Kim lives next door. She follows closely behind Ted, looking watchful. 'Do you want me to help you get there, Ted? Are you sure you're okay?' she asks. Ted smiles calmly. 'Don't worry about me, Kim. I go this way nearly every day!'
Ted stops at the corner of two streets. He lifts his head upward and breathes in deeply. 'Yes! The fish shop is over there. The smell is my teacher!' He turns right. Kim stares after him, greatly surprised.
'How did you pick the right way?' Kim asks. Ted sniffs the air and smiles proudly. 'The fish shop is on the way to the party. When I catch that smell, I am truly going the right way.' Kim breathes in deeply and grins. 'I can smell it too!'
Ted stops at a wall and reaches out to touch it. Cat sits on top, looking down keenly. 'What are you doing, Ted?' Kim asks. 'This wall has been my friend since childhood,' Ted says softly. 'There is no other wall like it in town. The feel of these stones tells me to turn left here!'
'Watch out, Ted!' Kim yells loudly, pointing at the wide puddle. 'You will get soaked!' Ted calmly walks around it, smiling. Not a drop touches his feet. 'See? I'm fully dry!' he says brightly.
'My stick helps me see what I can't,' Ted says proudly, tapping it on the ground. 'I could feel the water, so I could tell just where it was.' 'Wow!' Kim says. 'That is truly the best thing I have ever seen! We're nearly at the party now.'
Ted and Kim walk onward along the street. A big dog barks loudly from behind a gate. Cat leaps onto the post, startled. 'Look out, Ted!' Kim yells, and grabs his arm. But Ted stays calm and boldly turns left down a nearby street.
'Let me guess this time!' Kim says brightly. 'You can hear the dog barking, it lives there, and that is how you found the right turn!' 'That's right,' Ted says. 'My ears are always active. There are many things that tell me where to go.'
'Smells, touch, sounds, and my stick. They all help me find the way,' Ted says. 'And right now, we are getting closer to the party. I can smell cake!' Kim's eyes widen and she grins widely, throwing her hands up high.
'We are here!' Kim shouts loudly. Balloons cover the house brightly. Ted steps forward with a gift, smiling warmly. Cat trots up beside them. 'I can smell and hear the party now,' Ted says. 'Let's go inside!'
Ted and Kim sit at a long table with their friends. They all wear party hats, and the table is full of cake and treats. 'I am truly glad you led the way, Ted,' Kim says, smiling. Ted grins. 'And I am thankful for our friendship.'
