Spike had no pals. He went up to some trees to say hi. They shut him out at first sight.
Some trees are rude. Spike did not mind. He went off with light steps to find a plant pal.
Spike spotted a bright tree by itself. 'You might like a chum to chat with,' he said. The tree scowled down. 'No. Go away.'
Next, Spike sees a big tree with green leaves. It shrieks in fright, and small plants run off. 'I might be a bit sharp,' says Spike with a sigh.
Spike steps up to a tree, and it sighs. A bush sighs at the sight of him too. 'Keep away!' they say. Spike creeps off, sad.
He made his way to a pawpaw. Pawpaw is so high up. 'Might you be my pal?' Spike asks.
The pawpaw felt bad for him. He said it would be right to be pals.
They were pals at last! But with one tight hug, Spike hurt the pawpaw by mistake.
The pawpaw was in a fright. 'Go find a spikey pal!' he yells. He pulled away from Spike.
Spike looked high and low, but there were no spikey plants in the garden. He left.
He went to the dunes. Right there was a bush by itself. It had thorns all over!
Spike left his pot behind and went to the dunes with his new pal. The sun was bright.
