The big fig tree has the best figs in town. But hornets come and spoil it all.
The swarm buzzes at all who come near. It gets a goat, a bug, a boy. Gran and her bag fall down. She runs fast.
Anansi is mad for figs. The town calls for figs, too. 'I will get the figs,' he says in a big voice. No one else can help.
Anansi finds Kofi. He gives Kofi a coin. 'Take the drum down to the deep pit,' he says. 'Beat it. Do not stop.' Kofi nods and goes.
Anansi goes up near the swarm. They turn to face him. 'Great hornets, I know a thing,' he says. The swarm makes no noise. They wish to know things.
'A new swarm sits in the pit,' says Anansi. 'Big hornets. They say the queen has a dull buzz.' The queen starts to boil. 'Buzz more! Prove we are best!' she yells.
The swarm sits back down. Then a drum rolls out. boom, boom, boom. It is just like a new swarm. Far off, Kofi toils at his drum. Is it a true swarm?
Anansi comes near. 'Look, queen! They mock the swarm,' he says. The queen's eyes are mad. 'We will all join and buzz in their faces!' 'Yes,' Anansi nods. 'Buzz more! Prove we are best!'
All the swarm heads off to the pit. Kofi sees them come. He hoists his drum and runs to the wood. The swarm falls down in the pit. They find only roots, but no one is there.
Anansi runs back. 'Come, all! Bring the pots!' he calls. The town runs out and grabs figs fast. They eat as they grab. Gran fills three pots with joy. Then a mad buzz comes near...
The swarm buzzes back, mad and loud. Anansi grabs one last fat fig. He falls down a coil of web, fast as a bug. The swarm finds no figs at all. Anansi runs off fast.
Now the town eats figs and soup. Drums play. Anansi sits in the best seat. He eats till he is round as the moon. He beat the swarm with a ploy, not toil. The hornets fly far off to a new tree. When a big head looks for a fight, we say, 'Buzz more! Prove we are best!'
