Who Got My Nuts? UFLI Foundations Lesson 79
Practice Words
Look at this big, tall tree. It has little homes with red tops. Dark holes dot the trunk. Who can be in there?
Pip has lots and lots of nuts. She tucks them into a hole by the pumpkins. 'Forty nuts!' says Pip. 'I must get more before the storms start.'
In the morning, Pip checks the hole. It is empty. Not one nut is left! 'Who took my nuts?' yells Pip. A bird hops up. 'Not me,' says the bird.
Pip darts up to the large hive. Bees buzz all around it. 'Who took my nuts?' Pip asks the bees. The bees hum, 'No, no, no. We did not see a thing.'
Pip asks and asks. The bees get mad and rush at Pip! Pip slips off the branch. She tumbles far, far to the land.
Pip spots a fly by the plants. 'Help me find my nuts!' calls Pip. The fly just darts off. Pip sits on a rock. She is sad and sore.
'Pip!' calls Liz from a branch. 'Have a bit of my snack.' 'No, thank you, Liz,' says Pip. 'Save it for a party. I will find my nuts.'
Liz sits by Pip on the branch. 'Nobody stole the nuts,' says Liz. Pip thinks hard. 'Then where did my nuts go?'
Pip grips the bark and starts to go to the base of the tree. Sniff, sniff! What is that small sound? It is Chip!
'I dug a hole,' says Chip. 'But I dug too far. My hole broke into the nut store! All the nuts fell in. It was a mistake.' Chip is so sad. Pip just grins. They pick up the nuts.
Pip gets planks. Bang, bang, bang! She shuts the hole with the planks. 'There,' says Pip. 'No more lost nuts!' Then she zips up to the little home in the branches.
Pip sits snug with a blanket and sips from a cup. The sun sets. 'Forty nuts, all safe in my store,' says Pip. 'Nobody took them at all!'
