On the left side of the image, Ted stands smiling confidently in front of a suburban American house with a front fence, holding a white cane in one hand. He wears a peach/salmon-colored baseball cap worn forward over short dark hair, a white-and-blue horizontally striped short-sleeve t-shirt, and burnt-orange/rust-colored shorts, with bare feet. He has a cheerful, determined expression as he sets off on his journey. Cat peeks out from behind the fence on the right side of the house, with wide curious eyes, watching Ted as he heads out. The scene is set outdoors on a bright, sunny day with green bushes and a blue sky with white clouds behind the house. The right ~40% of the image is plain white background.

Ted grabbed his white cane and marched out the door. Today was the day of the birthday party. There would be cake. There would be games. And Ted knew exactly how to get there. No map. No sign. Behind the fence, Cat watched him go with wide eyes. Ted did not need to see Cat to know Cat was there. He always knew.

On the right side of the image, Ted walks confidently forward with his eyes closed and a calm, content smile, holding a white cane out in front of him. He wears his peach/salmon-colored baseball cap, white-and-blue horizontally striped t-shirt, and burnt-orange/rust-colored shorts. Behind him, Kim walks with her arms slightly outstretched and a concerned, watchful expression, looking up at Ted as she follows. She wears her coral-red A-line dress with white polka dots and a pink bow in her side ponytail. Cat trots along behind Kim, looking alert and curious. The three are walking in a line across a plain, light outdoor ground with a clean white background.

'Wait! Wait wait wait!' Kim came running up behind him, arms out wide. Kim often did this. 'Ted, do you want help? Are you sure you are okay?' Ted kept walking. He smiled his kindest smile. 'Kim. I walk to school every single day. I walk to the park. I walk to the shop and back. Finding the party is not going to be hard.' 'But what if you get lost?' Kim whispered. 'I will not,' said Ted. 'I know the way.'

Page 3
On the left side of the image, Ted stands at a street corner with his eyes closed and head tilted upward, breathing in the air with a confident expression, holding his white cane. Behind and to his left, Kim follows with a surprised, wide-eyed expression and open mouth. The scene is set outdoors on a sunny day at an intersection, with buildings, a fence, and green bushes visible in the background. The right ~40% of the image is plain peach/tan background.

At the corner of Marsh Street, Ted stopped. He lifted his chin and took one long, deep breath through his nose. Then he grinned. 'This way.' He turned right. Kim's mouth fell open. 'How did you do that? There's no sign! Not a thing! How did you know to turn right?'

Page 4
In the lower-center of the image, Ted is shown sniffing the air with his eyes closed and a proud, contented expression, with wavy scent lines rising from the direction of a nearby fish shop. Next to him, Kim smiles with eyes happily shut, also breathing in deeply and enjoying the fishy aroma. To the right, a fish shop worker is shown holding a bowl of fish. The characters are depicted in circular/rounded vignette-style frames arranged across the bottom half of the image. Along the left edge, a suburban street scene with buildings and green hillside is partially visible, while the top half remains open white background. Small playful doodle-like figures of cats and children are scattered between the vignettes.

'Can't you smell that?' Ted said. Kim sniffed the air. Her eyes went wide. 'Fish!' 'The fish shop,' Ted said proudly. 'It's three streets before school. When I catch that whiff, I turn right. Works every time.' Kim took a big sniff and smiled. 'It really does smell like fish!'

Page 5
On the left side of the image, Ted stands facing a large dark cobblestone wall, smiling with his eyes closed as he reaches out with one hand to touch its rough stone surface, holding his white cane in his other hand. Kim stands just behind and to the left of Ted, looking up at him with a curious, slightly concerned expression. Cat is perched on top of the stone wall, peering down at Ted keenly with wide eyes. The scene is set outdoors on a sunny day along a small-town street, with shops and buildings with colorful rooftops visible in the background to the far left. The right ~40% of the image is plain white background.

Down the next street, Ted stopped at a tall stone wall. He ran his fingers slowly across the gnarled, bumpy stone. Cat sat on top, peering down at him. 'What are you doing now?' Kim asked. 'Saying hello to an old friend,' Ted said with a smile. 'I have felt this wall since I was three. Every bump. Every crack. There's no other wall like it in town. And it tells me to turn left.'

Page 6
In the lower half of the image, Kim leans forward near the edge of a large puddle with a worried, fearful expression, one arm outstretched pointing at the puddle as she warns Ted. Ted walks calmly around the far side of the puddle with his eyes closed and a confident smile, his white cane sweeping ahead of him, his feet completely dry. The scene is set outdoors on a dirt path beside a stone wall, with a fence and bushes visible in the background. The top half of the image is open sky with soft clouds, leaving clear space for text.

'Watch out, Ted!' Kim lunged forward, pointing at the big puddle that glistened across the path. 'You will get soaked! You will get wet! You will...' Ted calmly walked around it. Not one drop landed on his bare feet. Kim blinked. They were perfectly dry. 'You were saying?' Ted said, still smiling.

Page 7
On the right side of the image, Ted stands proudly tapping his white cane on the ground, with a confident smile on his face. Kim stands beside him, looking at him with a wide-eyed, impressed expression and a big smile. They are on a sandy outdoor path near a body of water visible at the bottom-right edge. Behind them are colorful structures — a striped purple-and-white fence or wall and green and purple panels, suggesting they are approaching a neighborhood or party venue. The left portion of the image is mostly open background.

'But... how?' Kim sputtered. Ted tapped his cane on the ground. Tap. Tap tap. 'Listen. When my cane taps water, the sound changes. The feeling changes. So I knew exactly where the puddle started, and exactly where it ended.' Kim stared at the cane, then at the puddle, then back at Ted. 'That is the coolest thing I have ever seen in my life.' Ted shrugged like it was nothing. But his grin said otherwise.

Page 8
On the left side of the image, Ted and Kim stand on a sidewalk in front of a fence and gate. Kim is in the foreground, looking alarmed with wide eyes and a fearful expression, one arm extended protectively as she shouts a warning. Ted stands just behind Kim, eyes closed and smiling calmly, appearing completely unfazed. Cat is perched on top of the fence post above, looking down at the scene with a startled expression, having leapt up in surprise. A large brown dog pokes its head through the gate, mouth open and barking energetically. The right ~40% of the image is plain muted purple background.

Woof! Woof woof woof! A big brown dog shoved its head through a gate, barking so loud that Cat jumped up on a fence post. 'Look out, Ted!' Kim shouted, grabbing his arm. But Ted just laughed. 'I know that dog. He often barks at people. He has been barking at me since Monday.' Ted turned left down the next street. 'And that is how I know to turn.'

Page 9
On the right side of the image, Ted and Kim are walking together along a suburban neighborhood street, with houses, power lines, trees, and a small market stall with colorful balloons visible in the background. Above them in a large thought-bubble cloud, three stylized sensory icons float — depicting a barking dog, musical notes, and other neighborhood sounds — representing the sounds Ted uses to navigate. Ted walks smiling confidently, while Kim looks at him with a bright, impressed expression, gesturing as she speaks.

Kim's eyes lit up. 'Let me guess! You can hear the dog barking, and you know where it lives. That is how you knew to turn!' 'Now you are getting it,' Ted said. 'I listen. I smell. I feel. And my cane taps. Four guides, and they never take a day off.' 'Smell, feel, sound...' Kim counted on her fingers. 'Ted, you do not just know the way. You know everything about the way.'

Page 10
On the left side of the image, Ted walks confidently forward holding his white blind persons cane out in front of him, eyes closed and smiling contentedly, while Kim walks beside him on his left, looking up at him with wide eyes full of happiness and her hands raised in delight, an excited open-mouth grin on her face. They are on a suburban American sidewalk with a power line pole, houses, and buildings visible in the background. Cat walks along the path near them, and a few children can be seen walking in the background behind them.

Then Ted stopped. He took a long, slow sniff. 'Yes,' he whispered. 'Cake. We're close.' Kim gasped. She sniffed too. Her face lit up. 'I can smell it! Ted, I can smell the cake from this spot!' Kim was aching to run to the door. But she made herself walk. She wanted to walk the last bit with Ted.

Page 11
On the right side of the image, Ted, Kim, and Cat stand in front of a house decorated with colorful balloons, streamers, and bunting for a party. Ted is standing and smiling warmly, holding a wrapped gift box. Kim stands nearby with a joyful, excited expression, looking toward the decorated entrance. Cat is visible among the group, also facing the party venue with an eager posture. The scene is set outdoors on a bright day in a suburban American neighborhood, with green trees and a wooden fence flanking the festively decorated house. Several other children are visible near the entrance and around the party venue.

'We made it!' Kim shouted, jumping up and down. Balloons bobbed in the breeze, and the doorway was bustling with music, cheers, and party guests spilling outside. Ted stepped forward, holding a perfectly wrapped gift. 'Told you I knew the way.' Cat trotted up beside them, sat down, and licked one paw before turning to face the door.

Page 12
On the left side of the image, Ted and Kim sit at a long table with several friends at an indoor party. The table is laden with food including cake, fruit, and various dishes. Ted sits grinning broadly with eyes closed contentedly, wearing a party hat. Kim sits in the foreground on the right side of the table, smiling warmly. Three friends sit along the table between them, all wearing party hats and looking happy. Colorful paper streamers and bunting hang from the ceiling above. The right ~40% of the image is plain olive/sage background.

Inside, the table was piled high with cake and fruit and more food than all of them could eat. Ted and Kim sat with their friends, party hats on, stomachs full. 'Ted,' Kim said, 'I'm really glad you knew the way.' Ted grinned. 'And I'm glad you came with me, Kim. It's more fun with a friend.' Kim smiled. Then she paused. 'Ted... how do we get home?' Ted leaned back in his chair. 'Easy. I just follow the smell of fish.'
