The Old Frame Would Not Rest UFLI Foundations Lesson 82
Practice Words
Kim's mother sits at her big loom. She works the string with her hands, and she sings her soft song. Red and gold twirl under her fingers. Kim's mother is an expert at the loom.
'Mama, can I work the loom?' asks Kim. 'After a rest, little one,' says her mother. So Kim curls up on the rug with her red blanket. Her mother's song hums on, and Kim drifts off.
Tap, tap, tap! Kim wakes up. The tapping disturbs her rest. She pulls the blanket up to her chin. 'Stop that!' says Kim. But the tapping never stops. Tap, tap, tap!
Kim steps out the big doors and on to the path. Tap, tap, tap! The tapping turns at a corner, so Kim turns after it. Kim dashes up the path. 'Stop!' calls Kim.
There it is. A loom! It is old and dirty, and it shakes and shakes. Tap, tap, tap! 'Is it the loom tapping?' asks Kim.
Kim sits at the loom and rests her hands on it, just like her mother. The loom starts up all by itself! String whirls and twirls under her hands, red and gold. 'I did not do that!' yells Kim.
The loom lifts up into the sky! It rises up and up, over the tops of the homes. Kim grips the loom hard. A little gecko clings on beside her. 'Hold on!' yells Kim.
A big pink bird glides up beside Kim. Kim grins a big grin. Her mother's song fills the sky. The fabric whirls after the loom like a cape.
Then the loom tips and dives! Splash! Kim and the gecko sink into the dark. Bubbles swirl by her. Kim grips the loom and holds on.
Kim bursts back up on the froth. She surfs! Pink and gold fish spin by her. Kim is wet, but she giggles and giggles. She never wants this to stop.
The loom whirls up into swirling shapes. Plants pop up and shimmer, pink and gold. Kim lifts her arms up wide. 'More!' yells Kim. 'More, more, more!'
Then Kim blinks. She is back on the rug, and her blanket is in a twist. Her mother sits by her and sings her soft song. 'Mama,' whispers Kim, 'that song can lift me up to another world!' Her mother just smiles and sings on.
