In the lower-right portion of the image, Panha stands gazing upward at the hazy, smog-filled sky with a curious, contemplative expression. She is positioned on a dirt road at the edge of a small suburban American neighborhood nestled among green, tree-covered hills, with a large factory billowing smoke from its chimneys visible in the background on the left. The sky is thick with gray-green smog that hangs heavily over the rooftops. A couple of small dogs are visible on the road near the houses in the lower-left area.

Jade hated the sky above her town. It was gray and thick and smelled like old socks, and smog from the big plant hung over the rooftops and never left. Jade knew blue was up there. She had seen it in a book. Two small dogs ran past on the road, noses low, and even they did not bother looking up.

Page 2
On the right side of the image, Dad stands in the foreground with a serious, reflective expression, one hand raised as he speaks and gestures. Panha stands to his left, facing Dad with a frown and her hands at her sides, listening with a wistful, unhappy expression. The outdoor scene is set along a dirt path bordered by a wooden fence and lush green vegetation, under an overcast, hazy sky suggesting smoggy conditions. A body of water is visible in the background.

'Dad,' Jade said. 'Was the sky always this ugly?' Dad went still and looked up. His face went soft. 'When I was a boy, the sun came out each day. I could feel it on my face, hot and bright.' 'I want that,' Jade said. 'Me too, kid.' Dad gave a wry smile and kept walking. But Jade did not smile. Jade made a plan.

The image is split into three vertical panels. In the left panel, Panha — a girl with a black braided pigtail, pink t-shirt, and blue shorts, barefoot — stands on a rocky, grassy hillside on the left side, seen in profile looking out over a suburban neighborhood below with small red-roofed houses and a winding road, while factories in the distance belch smoke and smog into a gray, overcast sky. In the middle panel, Panha stands on the grass in profile, looking up with a curious, uncertain expression at the gray clouds above, where faint yellow rays of sunlight begin to peek through and small birds fly. In the right panel, Panha stands on the grassy hilltop facing forward, beaming with a wide open-mouthed smile and both arms spread wide, looking up joyfully as bright sunlight breaks through the thinning clouds above. Small birds are visible flying in the lighter sky.

Jade climbed to the top of the tallest hill outside town. Down below, the plant puffed out thick smoke. The gray cloud stretched over every house and every street. But up at the top, the smog got thin. And thinner. And then... sunlight. Real, bright sunlight hit Jade right in the face. She held her arms wide and let out a yell. 'You are up there!' she shouted at the sky. 'I knew it!'

Panha stands at a workbench on the right-center of the image inside a wooden workshop, leaning over a wooden frame with a focused, determined expression as she inserts gears into the frame with both hands. The indoor workshop is filled with tools — a pegboard of hand tools (wrenches, saws, hammers) on the right wall, propeller blades, gears, chains, a barrel, and lumber scattered around the floor. A shelf unit with supplies stands to the left, and a small wooden stool sits nearby. The warm, amber-toned lighting gives the garage workshop a cozy feel.

Jade burst into the shop. Wrenches, saws, and hammers hung on every wall. Parts and planks lay all over the floor. It was a grand mess. 'I need to get above the smog,' Jade said, picking up a big stack of parts. 'So I am making a plane.' She pressed part after part into a wooden frame. She had never made a plane before. How hard could it be?

Page 5
The image is a three-panel comic-style sequence positioned on the left side. In the first panel, Panha sits in the cockpit of a handmade wooden plane on a grassy hilltop, gripping the frame with a determined expression as the propeller spins and the plane lifts off. In the second panel, the plane spirals out of control through a cloudy sky, breaking apart mid-flight as pieces of wood fly off. In the third panel, Panha clings to the trunk of a tall oak tree with a frustrated but determined expression, the crashed plane's wreckage wedged in the branches above her, as she works her way down. A suburban American neighborhood with houses is visible in the background below the hill.

Very hard, as it turned out. Her plane shot off the hilltop like a rocket. For three perfect seconds, she was flying. Then both wings wobbled, and the plane broke apart as it fell. What a wreck! Jade crashed into the tallest tree on the hill. She climbed down, branch by branch, with a bolt in her braid. 'Fine,' Jade said. 'That plane was bad. The next one will not be.'

Page 6
On the right side of the image, Panha stands next to a large handmade wooden airplane with wide fabric-covered wings and a front propeller. She is reaching up with one hand to adjust gears near the propeller mechanism, looking at them with a focused, determined expression. Dad stands nearby on the left, holding a wrench and watching Panha work with a supportive expression. The scene is set indoors in the garage workshop, with a toolbox on the ground nearby and tools hanging on the wall behind them.

This time, Dad helped. He took a wrench and bolted on two wide, strong wings. Jade fit each cog in tight until the prop spun smooth and strong. No wobbles. No rattles. They stood back and looked at the new plane. It was twice as big and ten times as strong. 'Think it will fly?' Dad asked. Jade smiled. 'Only one way to find out.'

Page 7
The image is a two-panel illustration. In the left panel, on the left side, a group of townspeople gathers outdoors to watch as a handmade bicycle-powered flying machine is wheeled forward on a dirt path, with trees and large rocks in the background. In the right panel, shown on the left side, Dad stands facing Panha with a proud, encouraging expression, holding out a flight helmet toward her; Panha sits on the seat of the flying machine, looking determined and slightly nervous as she reaches to accept the helmet. The right portion of the overall image is plain white background.

Word spread fast. By the time Jade wheeled her plane up the path, most of the town had come out to watch. 'She crashed last time!' a man yelled. 'She will crash again!' said another. Jade did not mind. She climbed in and gripped the frame. Dad held out a helmet. 'Do not come back without the sun,' he said. Jade pulled it on. 'I won't come back until I find it.'

Page 8
On the right side of the image, Panha sits in the cockpit of a handmade wooden plane with large fabric wings and a propeller, wearing a flight helmet, soaring out over the ocean from a grassy coastal cliff edge. She grips the frame with one hand and looks down with a joyful, excited expression, waving with her other hand. Below on the cliff in the center-right, Dad stands among a crowd of townspeople on a sandy clearing, waving up at Panha as she flies overhead. The scene is outdoors under an overcast sky with the sea stretching to the horizon.

The plane roared. The wheels bumped off the cliff edge, and then there was nothing but sky. Jade was really flying, no trees this time. Jade whooped and waved at the tiny crowd far below. Dad waved with the rest of the town. The town let out a shout. She held the frame with both hands and aimed the nose up. She climbed past the gray, past the thick smog. Higher and higher, until...

Page 9
On the left side of the image, Panha stands among clouds wearing a flight helmet, looking upward toward Sun, who floats above as a large, friendly, anthropomorphic sun with a knowing expression and a slight smile. Sun has a speech bubble containing an image of smoking factory chimneys, explaining to Panha that smog from the factories is blocking the light. The scene is set high in the sky, surrounded by hazy yellow light and soft clouds, with the right side open as plain golden-yellow sky.

Jade burst past the top of the clouds into blazing golden light. And there was Sun. Not just sunlight. Sun, a big, round, glowing face, looking right at her. 'At last!' Sun called. 'Do you know how long I have been stuck in this spot? Nobody gets my call past all that smoke!' Jade blinked. 'You can... talk?' 'I can!' Sun said. 'That smoke blocks everything. Shut it down, kid. Or my rays will never reach the town.'

Page 10
On the right side of the image, a two-panel scene shows Panha rallying her community to take action. In the left panel, Panha stands at the center-right wearing a flight helmet, with her arms raised enthusiastically, addressing a large crowd of townspeople gathered in a suburban American neighborhood with houses and trees in the background under an overcast, polluted sky with a factory visible behind them. In the right panel, the townspeople are shown working together on the right side — digging with shovels, planting saplings, and clearing debris along a riverbank near a hillside, with determined and focused expressions as they restore the landscape.

Jade zoomed home fast. She landed in the middle of town, climbed on top of her plane, and held her hands to her mouth. 'I met the sun!' Jade yelled. 'Sun says the smoke is blocking everything. We have to fix this. All of us. Right now.' For one second, nobody moved. Then one man took a spade. Then another. Then all of them. They planted trees and cleaned the river, side by side, until the smog started to thin.

Page 11
On the left and center of the image, Panha stands in the foreground on a sandy beach wearing a flight helmet, smiling proudly, while Dad stands among a large gathered crowd of townspeople behind her, also smiling. Sun beams down from the upper-left corner with a big, cheerful smile. In the background, people are swimming in the water, children play on the sand, and someone relaxes on a lounge chair under an umbrella, with a suburban neighborhood and green hills visible beyond the beach. The right side of the image is plain background.

And then, one morning, Sun burst free. Not a little peek. The full sun, beaming down with the widest, boldest smile Jade had ever seen. 'There you are!' Sun called. 'I missed you people!' Bright light washed over the town. Children ran to the beach and splashed into the water. Jade stood on the sand with Dad. Her tired limbs felt light at last. Dad put his hand on her arm. 'You got it back,' he said.

Page 12
In the lower half of the image, Panha stands in front of a handmade wooden propeller plane wearing a flight helmet, gripping the propeller with a determined expression, while Dad stands just behind her with his hands on the plane's nose, smiling gently as they prepare together. A paper plan or blueprint lies on the ground near Panha's feet. The scene is set outdoors on a flat grassy field with a clear blue sky and distant trees in the background.

'Dad,' Jade said the very next morning. She stood beside a brand new plane, helmet on, prop set to go. A plan lay at her feet. 'There are other towns with gray skies. I checked. I know just where to go.' Dad smiled and put both hands on the nose of the plane. 'Then you had better go tell them.' Jade gave the prop a spin. She had a sun to deliver.
