Zom is in his pumpkin patch. 'My pumpkins!' he says with a grin. 'I check my crop all the time, and my crop is grand.'
The pumpkins get big. So big! 'I will bake cakes,' says Zom. 'My cakes will satisfy all my pals. Who can deny it?'
The next day, one pumpkin is lost. Zom looks at the flat spot of mud. 'Why?' he says. 'Why is my pumpkin lost? A sly bandit did this.'
Skel and Bones come to help. Bones sniffs the land, trying to find a track. No luck. 'Why can we not find one hint?' asks Skel.
The next day, two pumpkins vanish. Zom wants to cry. 'That is it!' he yells. 'I will catch this sly bandit myself. I will not rest!'
'I will spy on the patch at bedtime,' says Zom. 'I will hide, and I will nab the bandit.' 'Will you nap, Zom?' asks Skel. 'Not me,' says Zom.
Zom sits by the pumpkins. The sky is so dim. He tries and tries to spy, but his chin sags. Zom drifts off into a nap.
Zom wakes up. Just one pumpkin is left! 'Why?' he yells. 'Why did they all vanish? I was by them all this time!'
'We will take shifts and sit by this pumpkin,' says Zom. 'I rely on it for seeds. It is my last one.' Skel nods. 'We will not let it vanish.'
The pumpkin spins! It shakes and kicks up mud. Bones barks and barks. 'Why is it spinning?' yells Zom. The land cracks. 'Do not let my pumpkin drop in!'
Pop! Up comes the pumpkin, with legs and a big grin. 'Hi! My name is Jack. Do not be shy,' he says. 'The rest woke up and left. I did try to stop them!'
'Be with us, Jack!' says Zom. 'No cakes for me, but a new pal is best.' Jack is glad. At bedtime, pumpkins skip by. Why? Who can tell!
