On the right side of the image, Rose stands facing the viewer with a worried, downcast expression, looking large and heavily woolly, her fleece in pastel patches of pink, yellow, and blue. In the background on the far right, a green hillside slopes upward with small trees and small silhouettes of other sheep grazing on it. Colorful clouds in warm oranges, teals, and golds billow across the upper right of the scene, and the left side remains open, pale cream sky.

Rose had spent all summer as the biggest sheep on the hill, eating sweet grass and sniffing the cool breeze. But summer was ending, and she trotted down to her snug hay bed at the farm. Then she stopped. The farmer had put in a new gate, a very small, very not-Rose-sized gate.

Page 2
On the left side of the image, Rose is wedged in a wooden farm gate, stuck partway through with a strained expression as several other sheep push and shove from behind, trying to force her through the narrow opening. Rose is clearly too large to fit, her body filling the gate completely. Below and slightly to the left, three more sheep stand watching the commotion, looking up toward the gate with concerned expressions. The scene is set outdoors on a sunny day in a grassy farm paddock, with more sheep visible behind the fence in the green field beyond. The right ~40% of the image is plain white/light background.

'Go on, Rose! Just squeeze past!' called the sheep behind her. Rose tried. She really tried. The sheep shoved and bumped and pushed, and Rose wedged into that gate like a cork in a bottle. She was the biggest sheep on the hill, and she could not go on. She could not go back. She was stuck. 'Stop pushing!' Rose cried. 'You are squishing my face!'

Page 3
On the right side of the image, Yoga Sheep is performing a yoga pose — standing on her front legs in an inverted position (a headstand/foreleg stand) with her back legs pointing straight up, surrounded by radiant yellow and pink rays suggesting a sense of zen energy. She has a calm, serene expression. In the lower center-right, Rose sits on the ground with a large, round woolly body, looking up toward Yoga Sheep with a curious expression. A cluster of colorful wildflowers and plants sits between them. The scene is set outdoors on a grassy area against a plain white background.

A small sheep trotted over and balanced upside down, not even wobbling. 'I know just what you need,' said Zen, perfectly still. 'Stretching! I kneel and stretch each day, and look at me. I am the trimmest sheep on this hill. I float right past that gate.' Rose blinked. Zen did look very still. Very bendy. Very... small. 'Does it work?' Rose asked.

Page 4
On the left side of the image, Rose kneels on a yellow yoga mat, attempting a yoga stretch with a determined expression, her large woolly body looking stiff and awkward in the pose. In the upper-left corner, two smaller vignettes show Yoga Sheep performing different yoga stretches on a yellow mat — one in a forward fold and one in a headstand with legs in the air. Yoga Sheep appears encouraging and confident. The scene is set outdoors on warm golden-yellow ground with soft watercolor hills in the background.

'Trust me,' said Zen, rolling out a mat. 'Kneel. Stretch. Relax. Do it each day, and that gate will be no problem at all.' Rose knelt on the mat. She bent low. She stretched up high. She tried to relax the way Zen showed her. But mostly her nose just made a loud hissing sound. 'Fitter and fitter!' said Zen. 'Sort of.'

Page 5
On the right side of the image, Rose is shown in two poses against a bright, hot blue sky with intense sun rays beating down. In the upper pose, Rose is bending forward in a stretching position on a mat. In the lower pose, Rose is lying back on a mat, reaching upward with her legs extended, looking strained but determined. A leafy plant sits nearby on the far right, and the left side of the image is plain white background.

The sun was the hottest it had been all summer. Day after day, Rose bent and stretched on her mat under the blazing sky. She pointed her toes. She twisted into shapes that made the other sheep look away. But Rose kept going. If this was what it took to get home, she would stretch until her wool fell off.

Page 6
In the lower half of the image, Rose stands among tall green grass, facing right with a tired, weary expression — eyes partly closed and head slightly drooped. Her large, round woolly body fills much of the lower portion, emphasizing how big she still is. The top half of the image is plain white background. Small pink hearts peek out from the grass around her.

One full week of stretching. Rose's legs hurt. Her back was sore. Her nose still made that odd hissing sound. She walked up to the gate and held her breath. She turned sideways. She sucked in her tummy. Nope. Same gate. Same Rose. Same problem. She was no thinner than before. Rose let out a long, tired sigh.

Page 7
On the right side of the image, Rose is sitting on a grassy hillside, looking up with a worried, uncertain expression — her large woolly body takes up much of the lower-right area, and only her face peeks above her thick fleece. In the upper-right area, a thinner sheep stands on a slope, looking down at Rose with an encouraging expression, mid-stride as if demonstrating running. The scene is set outdoors on rolling golden-green hills under a pale blue sky.

'Stretching will not work!' called Kim, the thinnest jogger on the hill. 'Running is the answer! I run each day, rain or shine. Slim as a stick!' Kim did a lap, kicking up dust. Rose looked at Kim. Then she looked at the gate. Then she looked at her own big, round, wooly self. She sighed.

Page 8
On the left side of the image, Rose stands at the bottom of a steep hill, looking wide-eyed and exhausted, with her knees trembling and knocking together. She appears to be just finishing a run. In the background, two dark silhouetted sheep run up the hillside ahead of her. The outdoor scene features a warm golden-yellow sky and reddish-brown terrain, conveying the intense heat described in the text.

But Rose ran. Up the hill and down, each day. Rose was not a runner, but she ran anyway. The sun beat down, hotter and hotter, and her knees knocked together on every lap. After one full week, Rose wobbled up to the gate on shaky legs. Same gate. Same Rose. Same problem. 'I think,' she puffed, 'that all these plans are... not great.'

Page 9
On the right side of the image, Rose stands in shallow water looking surprised, her large woolly body partially submerged as she stops for a drink. A smaller sheep friend is swimming energetically in the water to the right of Rose, floating on her back with little red flippers on her feet, looking cheerful and relaxed. The scene is set outdoors beside a pond or lake, with rolling hills in warm yellow and reddish-brown tones in the background and green grassy banks along the water's edge.

Rose dragged herself to the pond for a drink. Then she spotted Pip, a swimmer, floating past on her back with red flippers and looking very pleased. 'Swimming!' said Pip, kicking along. 'Jump in, swim each day, and you will shrink right down. I give my word.' 'Your word?' said Rose, one brow up. 'No joke,' said Pip, splashing a flipper. 'Well... almost.'

Page 10
On the left side of the image, Rose is diving headfirst into a large wave of blue water, with a big splash erupting around her. She has a determined expression with wide eyes as she plunges into the water. The scene is outdoors with green grassy ground visible at the bottom and a bright white sky above, with the right side of the image fading to a plain muted teal background.

Rose did not wait. She backed up three steps, lowered her head, and launched herself into the pond with the biggest splash that pond had ever seen. A frog went flying into the tall grass. If swimming was the answer, Rose was going to swim harder than any sheep had ever swum.

Page 11
On the right side of the image, Rose the sheep is swimming on her back in blue water, with a happy, open-mouthed smile, her legs and pastel pink, yellow, and blue woolly body partially above the surface, her pink-curled head raised above the water. A small green parrot with a yellow beak sits perched on Rose's raised knee, looking ahead with a calm expression. The scene is set outdoors at sunset, with a large warm golden-orange sun glowing in the background behind them, evoking the late-summer heat mentioned in the text. The left side of the image is plain white background.

Rose swam all week. Each evening, she floated on her back in the golden light while a small bird sat on her knee like the skipper of a very wooly ship. It was just lovely. Cool water, a fine sunset, no one telling her to stretch or run. But Rose knew the truth. She was not one bit smaller. Three plans. Three weeks. No results.

Page 12
On the left side of the image, Rose the sheep is shown nearly in full, her fluffy pastel fleece of pink, yellow, and blue filling the lower left of the frame, with her small brown tail peeking out on the left and her dark front hooves tucked against her chest. She looks upward with wide, alert eyes and a cheerful, open-mouthed smile, her pink curly topknot framing her face. She stands on a grassy hillside at dusk, gazing up toward a gate at the top of the slope in the upper left. The right side of the image is plain peach-toned background, free of detail.

Rose climbed out of the pond, water dripping from her wool, and looked up the hill at the gate. She stared at it for a long, quiet moment. Then her eyes went wide. 'Oh!' she whispered. 'Oh!' A grin spread across her face, slow and glad. Rose felt like a winner. 'I do not need to get smaller. I have been thinking about this all wrong!'

Page 13
On the right side of the image, a collection of tools is displayed against a teal-blue background — a handsaw, a pair of scissors, a coiled rope, a hammer, a knife, and a wood plane are scattered together. A large red leather tool bag or pouch sits atop the pile, its strap dangling down. Small nails are sprinkled across the blue background around the tools.

Rose was a planner now. She packed her red bag with a saw, a hammer, cutters, a knife, a coil of rope, and a big fistful of nails. She marched up that hill with the bag bouncing on her back and a plan set in her mind. She had wood to cut, knots to tie, and one very silly little gate to fix.

Page 14
On the left side of the image, Rose is lying asleep on a bed of golden hay/straw, curled up peacefully among a group of sheep. Her eyes are closed with a content expression. A wooden fence winds upward and to the right in a dreamlike zigzag pattern. The scene has a soft, dreamy quality with a lavender-tinted background behind the sleeping figures, while the right side is plain white.

She cut and tied and fixed that gate. That night, Rose lay curled up in a soft pile of hay, right where she belonged. Her friends snored all around her. Her knees were tired. Her knuckles were sore. Sawdust was still stuck in her wool. But she was home, and she was snugger than ever. For the first time in three weeks, Rose closed her eyes and smiled.

Page 15
On the right side of the image, a group of sheep are clustered together against a light blue circular background, peering inward with curious, attentive expressions as they ask their question. The sheep are stacked vertically — one wears a green cap, another wears round glasses, and one has a small paper hat — all looking eagerly toward the left. On the left side, Rose sits facing them with a proud, confident expression, her large woolly body prominent. The left area leaves space for text above and below Rose.

'You got in!' the sheep cried the next morning, crowding close with wide eyes. 'How? Stretching did not work. Running did not work. Swimming did not work! What did you do?' They bumped and pushed, climbing over each other to get a better look. Rose just sat there, the snuggest sheep in the pen, with hay still stuck to her back.

Page 16
On the left side of the image, Rose is shown as a very large, round sheep with fluffy pastel pink, yellow, and blue wool, sitting proudly in a pile of orange hay/straw, looking cheerful and content. Behind her in the upper left, a widened wooden gate with fresh timber and neat new hinges shows that she has carefully rebuilt the gate to be bigger, with a saw, hammer, and coiled rope visible on the ground nearby as evidence of her handiwork. A smaller sheep with yellow wool stands to Rose's right, looking up at her admiringly. The right ~40% of the image is plain white background.

'I am strong, and I feel good,' said Rose, sitting tall. 'Stretching was nice. Running was hard. Swimming was fun. But I am still big.' She paused, and every sheep leaned in. 'So I stopped trying to shrink, picked up a saw, and made the gate fit me.' The sheep turned to look. There it was: a brand-new gate, wide and strong, with neat hinges and fresh wood. Wide for any sheep. Wide for the biggest sheep of all. Wide for Rose.
