Stay Still Stay Alive UFLI Foundations Lesson 88
Practice Words
Sand and sandstone stretch as far as you can see in the desert. The sky is a deep, bright blue above the dry sand dunes. The sun beams hot on everything below. Just a cactus and dry shrubs grow under the hot sun. The desert is a still, dry, empty place.
When the sun is high, the desert heat is very strong. It is so hot that everything in the desert stays still. Even the Minecraft figure stands still in the heat of the midday sun. The cactus casts thin shadows on the dry sand. A small rabbit in the sand stays still as well. Everything waits for the sun to set.
Water is very hard to find in a desert biome. It may not rain for weeks. There are no rivers, ponds, or creeks. With no water, it is hard to farm or live for long. The land is so dry that not many plants can grow. Animals and people need water to stay alive.
Desert animals find smart ways to beat the hot sun. Rabbits rest in the shade and lie still when the sun is at its peak. Staying still helps them use less water. The sand may stay very hot, but the shade helps them stay safe. Resting in the shade is the way to stay alive in the desert.
Sand stretches on and on, and everything looks the same. Each dune looks like the last. There are no trees or roads to show you the way. It is easy to get lost in the desert biome. Take a map before you go, or you may get lost! A map will help you find your way back.
When the sun sets, the desert turns cold fast. Camel stands by the glow of the melted rock to soak up the heat. With no trees or clouds, the heat slips away as night falls.
The desert is full of things to find! Fossils made of bone blocks may lie hidden below the sand. Pale stone blocks stand at the edge of a sandy pit. Hidden things may be waiting below. Dig deep and see what lies beneath!
Deserts are so dry that rain may not fall for weeks and weeks. The land can stay dry for a long, long time. Every plant and animal finds a way to collect and store water. Each raindrop is a treat to keep. Every living thing must find water to survive.
People make homes in the desert, just as in Minecraft. Desert homes are made from sand, sandstone, and timber. Real desert homes have thick walls to keep cool and deep wells to find water.
The desert is growing bigger and bigger. When farmland gets very dry and people cut the green plants, the dirt turns to dust. The land gets weak, and the sand starts to creep farther and farther. Growing green plants can help bring the green back. They slow the creeping sand. They help the land stay strong.
