So Many Sheep! Jolly Phonics ยท Step 3, Unit 8: /ue/ mixed
Practice Words
Dr. Can Do sees jobs, jobs, jobs. Not just a few. So many! Damp rooms! Plain rooms with no art! 'Look at this carpet,' he says at home. 'I made it from wool. Soft as a cloud. So snug. What if all the homes in town had one? That would be grand!'
Dr. Can Do marches to the farm. Sheep eat grass by the fence. One black sheep looks upset. It has no room! He clips one sheep. Clip, clip, clip. Phew! What a slow, hard job. He pants and pants. So many sheep to go! 'There must be a swift way,' he puffs. Then he grins. 'A rig! I must make a wool rig!'
So he makes his rig. The sheep stand in snug glass pens in the barn, with lanterns to keep them happy. The rig hums and picks up wool as the sheep just stand there. Sheep like to just stand there! Soon he has huge piles: red, white, brown, black. Wool in all hues! 'Done!' he says. Then he stops. 'Not done yet.'
Jill runs up to him on the path. 'One man can not do all the jobs in town,' she says. 'I can,' argues Dr. Can Do. 'When did you last sleep?' asks Jill. 'Sleep is for men who are done. I am not done. But fine. What is the plan?' 'Get help,' says Jill. 'A shepherd. Make a big wool shop, and he can run it.' 'Jill, that is a grand plan! A shop! A big shop! The best shop in town!'
The sun is not up yet, but Dr. Can Do is. Bang! Bang! He paces the dirt and marks his plan in it. 'Walls here. Roof there. Racks, racks, more racks!' By sunup the frame is up. By noon he has walls. By night he has a roof, racks with screws, and a grand name on top: Wool Shop. 'Done!' he says. Then he stops. 'Well, not done yet.'
A man peeps in at the shop. He sees the loom, the lanterns, and the huge red wool pile. 'Can I have this job?' he asks. 'Yes! Begin!' says Dr. Can Do. 'This man sees the value in wool!' The new shepherd gets right to the job. Jill brings the shepherd wool, and he sets a green gem in her hand, with a wink. By the shop wall, the boss grins a huge grin.
He stands by the wool shop and looks in. The shepherd tends the sheep in the big pen. He stacks new wool on the pile, wool on wool on wool. The shop runs well. It runs so well! The shepherd is a smart, handy man. Dr. Can Do has no next task. Not one thing to fix. Not one thing to make. He stands still. So still. Then, tap, tap, tap! His hand taps and taps.
Back in his home, he looks at the art on the walls and the soft carpet on the floor. All the homes in town are snug. He should sit and rest. But no. He looks out the window with that look. 'Guess what,' he says. 'I still have wool. Heaps and heaps! I could make a huge wind rig! Think what it could do!' From the path, Jill yells, 'Take a day off!' He grins. 'Not done yet!'
