Paint the Town! Jolly Phonics · Step 3, Unit 4: /ai/ mixed
Practice Words
Rex, Joy and Cal have one job. One big, big job. 'Paint the town!' Rex yells as the three dive down from the sky. Below them the town is dull. Dull, dull, dull. 'But wait,' calls Cal. 'Don't mix all three!'
Rex lands first. He must land first. 'I am red!' Rex yells, and hot flames rage beside him. 'Red is fire! Red is sunsets! Red is the best there is!' Rex flexes his arms. No one asks him to flex.
Joy lands in a spot of sunshine and smiles a huge smile. 'I am yellow,' says Joy. 'Yellow like sunshine and happy, happy days!' A bug lands on her nose. Joy smiles wider. 'Can we start to paint now?' calls Cal from up high.
Cal steps into a cool lake. No splash at all. 'I am blue,' says Cal. 'I am cool. And I am the one who reads the plan. Red with yellow is fine. Blue with red is fine. But don't mix all three!'
Rex grabs a fat paint tube. He sprays a long red line up in the sky. Joy reaches up and grins. 'What will red and yellow make?' 'Wait and see!' yells Rex.
Sploosh! A big orange burst fills the sky. Rex and Joy gaze up, mouths wide. 'Orange!' they yell. 'We can make a new color!' cheers Joy. 'Yes,' says Rex. 'All that I make is grand.'
'My turn,' says Cal. He sends a neat blue blob up into the sky. Rex leaps up to meet it with a big grin. 'Here it comes!' 'Take care,' says Cal. Rex does not take care.
Splat! A huge purple cloud blooms up high. 'Purple!' gasps Rex. 'Too much red,' says Cal. 'More blue will make it cool.' 'More blue will make it dull!' says Rex. Cal sighs a long sigh.
'Our turn now!' Joy grabs Cal by the arm. A yellow blob and a blue blob swirl up high. Joy flings her arms out wide. Cal stretches his long neck up to gaze at them. 'Oh,' whispers Cal. 'This will be so fine.'
Sploosh! Green bursts out. Green like grass. Green like a frog. Green like a leaf after rain. 'It is like sunshine and rain!' cheers Joy. Cal smiles. 'Yes. It is grand.' Then Rex grins a big, big grin.
'So,' says Rex, 'what if we mix all three?' Cal's face goes pale. 'No, no, no! Don't mix all three!' 'But what will happen?' asks Joy. 'No one can say!' yells Cal. 'That is why we must not do it!' Rex grins. Joy grins. They lift the paint tubes. 'Don't!' yells Cal. But his tube lifts up too.
They do it. Red, yellow and blue smash up high, and the sky goes bang! Colors with no names yet rain down on the rooftops and trees below. Rex, Joy and Cal stand still, gazing up with mouths open wide. 'We broke the rule,' whispers Cal. 'And it is the best thing I have ever seen.'
Rex stomps and jigs in the messy paint. Cal peeks down from up high, still in a daze. 'So,' says Joy, paint dripping from her nose, 'shall we do this all again?' 'Yes!' yells Rex. Cal starts to say a wise no. Then he stops. Then he smiles. 'I will get more paint.'
