Not Tonight, Monsters!
Practice Words
Two-syllable words where 'es' is added to form plurals, creating an extra syllable.
This is Ned. He used to hide in his house at night. But now, he does not have to. He has a sword. He stands outside and watches.
Ned does not have to wait long. Soon, a zombie crashes out of the bushes and starts to come close. Ned is a bit scared, but he holds his sword tight.
When the zombie gets too close, Ned swings the sword! Hack! Slash! Ned smashes him! The zombie is no more!
The zombie leaves behind something odd. Ned watches it, then picks it up. 'What is this?' he asks.
Then Ned hears a click. A thing of bones steps out from the trees, and it has a bow! It tries to shoot at Ned, but just misses. Ned dashes off to find a spot to hide.
Ned crouches behind the tree and holds his breath. The monster searches near the house, clicking as it turns. Ned holds his sword tight, and his heart thumps. Then the clicking gets closer, right on the other side of the tree.
Ned dashes out from behind the tree. He swings his big sword with all his might. The bones crash and fall in a pile on the grass! Now there is no monster left to fight.
Ned is a bit proud. 'I got a bone! Soon I will have a lot of these!' Uh oh. Ned does not see what is just inches behind him.
Ned is brave, but not that brave. He can't fight so many at the same time! Sometimes you just have to run. Ned dashes away!
Ned rushes all the way back to his house. But there is something in front of the door. Oh no! It's a spider!
There is no time to think. Ned dashes at the spider and grips his bright sword. He swings it up high as the spider hisses and lashes back with sharp fangs.
Ned leans on the wall as the torches flicker. Outside, he hears the monsters rushing away into the night. A tiny gold gem shines on the floor. Ned catches it and grins. 'Same time next night, monsters.'
