Look! Big Sis Cries! UFLI Foundations Lesson 81
Practice Words
Big Sis is up on a branch. She grins and hums a song. I hold on under her and squirm. My legs swing back and forth.
Big Sis holds her plane up. 'Look at this,' she calls. 'It will twirl up in the sky!' I stand and look up at her. I want to be just like Big Sis.
The plane twirls up and up. Then it whirls, and it drops. Crash! It smacks the dirt by Dog. Bits of the plane are all over. Dog blinks at the mess.
Dog jumps up. He barks and barks, and his fur is up. I squirm up on my branch. But Big Sis just stands there. 'Shush, Dog,' she says. 'It did not hurt.'
Big Sis digs in the dirt with her spade. 'First we get sticks,' she says. 'Then we can fix the plane.' I sit by her in the grass. Dog tugs a rope and whirls it.
Big Sis pats Dog on his soft fur. Dog wags fast. I hold her arm and squirm back. 'Dog is a pal,' says Big Sis with a grin.
Then Big Sis slips! I am holding her arm, so I slip too. We tumble and whirl in the dirt. But Big Sis never cries. Not Big Sis!
Big Sis gets up and holds the plane. She turns it and squints at it. 'We can fix this,' she says. I want to cry a bit. But Big Sis never cries, so I never cry.
Mom is not home yet. 'I can make supper,' says Big Sis. She gets a big book and a dish, and she stirs and stirs. I sit and look at her. Big Sis can do it all!
I step up and look over the bench. Chop, chop! Big Sis cuts a bulb on the slab, and it squirts. But her face is wet with drips. Is Big Sis crying?
I think hard. First, up on the branch: no crying. Then Dog and his big barks: no crying. Third, the fall in the dirt: no crying at all! So what can make Big Sis cry?
Big Sis holds up the cut bulb with a smirk. 'It is this bulb,' she says. 'It makes wet drips!' I giggle and grin. Big Sis never cries. Never ever!
