Anansi cooks all day. His yams and stew smell so good. He sits down to eat his meal. Then he hears a slow knock at the door.
It is Turtle, gray with dust. 'That stew smells good,' says Turtle. 'I walk all day.' Anansi grins a sly grin. 'Sit for a meal, Turtle. But first, we wash our hands.'
The pond is far. Turtle's legs are short. He walks back with clean hands. But now Anansi eats the yams. 'Wash again, Turtle,' says Anansi. So Turtle goes back.
At last Turtle comes back. The pots are all gone. Anansi leans back, full. 'I am sad, Turtle. I ate it all. Come back next time.' Turtle just nods and walks home. 'A guest sees how he is fed,' says Turtle.
Three days pass. A leaf comes to Anansi's door. It is from Turtle. 'Come to my home in the pond. I have a big feast.' Anansi grins and runs to the pond.
Anansi jumps in. But he floats! He can not sink. Down deep, Turtle sits at a feast. Anansi kicks and spins. But he pops back up each time.
Turtle comes up. 'Is there a snag?' he asks. 'The water pulls at me,' says Anansi. That is not real. 'Come down when you can,' says Turtle, and he sinks. Anansi sees flat rocks in the mud.
Anansi runs up the bank. He finds a thick reed coat. He fills it with six rocks. He jumps in and sinks right down. Turtle smiles and serves a great feast. Fish, clam, and more.
'First, we take off our coats,' says Turtle. 'It is my way.' But if Anansi drops the coat, he floats up. If he keeps it on, he can not reach the food. The fish steam. Turtle eats.
Anansi pulls at the coat. He hits his bowl, and the food falls. He gets one arm free. The coat shifts, and up he floats. Out of the water he goes, plop on the bank. Down deep, Turtle eats the last of the meat.
Turtle comes up, full and calm. 'I am sad, my friend. There was so much to eat. Come back next time.' Anansi sits on the bank, wet and glum, by his rocks. 'A guest sees how he is fed,' says Turtle, and he sinks back down.
Anansi goes home. He cooks yams and beans for four. The next day, a guest calls. Anansi feeds him fast, with no trip to the pond. A guest sees how he is fed. And so must the host who was a guest.
