Anansi and the Wisdom Pot UFLI Foundations Lesson 69
Practice Words
Anansi has a big plan. He wants all the wisdom in all the lands to go in his pot. He packs it in, shuts the lid, and latches it snug.
Anansi walks on the path and stops. He asks aged Tortoise for his best wisdom. Anansi fetches lots and lots of wisdom, and he packs it all in the pot.
Anansi clutches the pot to his chest and steps up the tall silk-cotton. But the pot bangs and tilts, and he slips back down. What a mess!
Ntikuma sits on a rock and looks up. 'Dad,' he calls, 'do not hug the pot. Attach it to the back with the rope, and then the legs can grip!'
Anansi stops still on the silk-cotton, and his face gets hot. His small kid has wisdom that is not in the pot. What a glitch in his big plan!
Anansi attaches the pot to his back with the rope. Then he grips the silk-cotton with all his legs. Up and up he steps, and Ntikuma looks on.
But then the rope slips! Anansi snatches at the pot, and he falls. The pot hits the silk-cotton with a crack, and the lid detaches and spins off.
The pot splits in two. The wisdom spills from it and drifts off on the wind. Anansi sits in the plants. He can not catch the wisdom. It is gone to all the lands.
Anansi and Ntikuma sit still by the split pot. Weaver-bird lands on it and sings a topnotch song. Anansi looks at his legs, and he is not so sad.
'I got lots of wisdom,' says Anansi, 'but I did not use it. My plan and my acts were a mismatch.' 'Dad,' says Ntikuma, 'the wisdom is not in a pot. It is in the use of it.'
Anansi is back home. A big batch of kids sits with him, and he tells them what he did. Anansi grins at his mess, and all the clan grins with him.
At home, Ntikuma fixes a big hitch in a rope, and the adults clap. Nyame looks down and smiles. No one has all the wisdom, and that is best of all.
